About a mile and a half north of the Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center sits the quiet retreat of Whittington Park. Whittington Park is a small section of Hot Springs National Park that can appeal to everyone but is often forgotten by many visitors. The mostly flat, packed gravel and dirt 1.16-mile Whittington Trail loop is perfect for strollers and wagons. Because Whittington Park is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, it is a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hot Springs.

Whittington Park also uniquely sits at the base of West Mountain. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the park’s small creek and easily access West Mountain Drive and the Mountain Top Trail.

The forgotten nature of Whittington Park makes it one of Hot Springs’ hidden gems for anyone who seeks a quieter, more accessible National Park experience!

🎵 Beneath the sweet magnolia tree…🎵

Sweet magnolia trees, indeed! Thank you, Dolly Parton, for summarizing our feelings on the magnolia trees lining Bathhouse Row!

The lawn border between the road and Bathhouse Row was constructed in the late 1890s. However, the original trees planted in that space were Lombardy poplars, not the southern magnolia trees we have today. The lawn border was, and is, an integral part of the landscape of Bathhouse Row. It created a large formal landscape space for the park, giving the bathhouses a more elegant and luxurious feel. Today, this walkway is called the Magnolia Promenade.

While southern magnolia trees have been planted throughout Arkansas, they are not native to this area of North America. Hot Springs is slightly west of their native habitat. Southern magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora) are native throughout the southeastern United States, the Gulf Coast, and north into North Carolina.

Although they’re not native flora, the magnolia trees are undoubtedly beautiful, particularly when their large white flowers are in bloom. Next time you visit Hot Springs National Park, make sure to stroll beneath them!
