So long to our Utah and Navajo Nation friends and neighbors! You have traveled forward an hour in time, and we won’t be able to sync back up with you until November! 🕑🕒

Planning a Glen Canyon trip soon? You might want to double-check what time it is. The state of Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so our clocks did not change. The Navajo Nation, which touches our southeast border, and Utah (most of our park's land mass) follow Daylight Saving time. Since Glen Canyon is headquartered in Page AZ, the park officially operates on Arizona time. This may bring some confusion as you approach the Utah or Navajo Nation borders. Those of us who live in Page often have to hard-set our phones to AZ time since the proximity to the borders makes our automatic clocks flicker back and forth. Also, some local businesses might use local time. Check go.nps.gov/GLCAhours for operating hours of the facilities in the park and time.gov to see what time it is where you are.

We checked up on Rainbow Bridge - It's still there, but a bit hard to reach. 🌈🌉🥾

Forbidding Canyon is too narrow for houseboats now, but smaller boats can go in and beach. Make sure you have enough gas to get your boat there and back. Beware of quicksand and muck at the water's edge. The hike from the shoreline to the Rainbow Bridge is 1.5 miles one way as of Aug 31. The only shade is at the two shade structures along the trail. Bring plenty of water and pace yourself, especially during these very hot days.

There are no facilities along the hike or at Rainbow Bridge, and the dock is out of commission. Please make sure you have taken care of personal needs before you hike up. It is very likely you will not get a signal there, so take care of yourselves.

📰New Release: May 26, 2022.
An Alternative Anchoring Pilot Program is underway on Lake Powell! The pilot program currently includes one commercial use authorization permit holder, Beach Bags, that offers a new technology designed to provide a non-destructive houseboat anchoring system for use on sandstone outcroppings previously inaccessible using conventional anchoring methods. This non-destructive anchoring method can provide a viable alternative to the growing practice of illegally securing houseboats using rebar and other types of metal pins drilled into sandstone along the shoreline.

March is Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month! Help us celebrate by learning how you can help protect heritage sites and visit them responsibly. Have you ever visited a historic site and noticed piles of artifacts like pottery or glass pieces? Archeologists call these “collector piles” and find them very harmful to archeological sites.

Historic objects older than 50 years are protected. Surface artifacts can be abundant in areas of Glen Canyon and while it may be tempting to pick up pieces you find on the ground, please leave them in place. These objects tell a story of human occupation in this area and have scientific importance. Removing, relocating, or collecting artifacts from their original location or “context” destroys much of their information potential for archeologists.
If you see artifacts on the ground, please leave them where they are. If you encounter collector piles in the park, please do not take from or add items to them.

We have some news to share from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area regarding Dangling Rope Marina and Lake Powell:

“Due to unprecedented low water conditions at Lake Powell, the Dangling Rope Marina will remain closed throughout 2022. In response to lowering lake levels, park and concessioner staff are removing marina components from the Dangling Rope location to ensure they do not become beached and inaccessible. While the marina is offline this year, the park will retire several components of the marina that are damaged or beyond their lifecycle.”
- GLCA Press Release

The National Park Service and Aramark are working on plans to provide mid-lake fuel service for visitors on Lake Powell for 2022. We will keep you posted with updates.

Due to rapidly declining water levels in Lake Powell, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is immediately initiating two projects to rehabilitate a legacy ramp in the Wahweap area and temporarily extend a launch ramp in the Bullfrog area. These projects will help maintain visitor access to Lake Powell during low water conditions by providing at least one boat ramp in both the south lake and north lake area.

Additional ramp closures and restrictions are being implemented and will remain in place until ramp extension projects are accomplished or water levels increase.

South Lake Powell:
🔹Temporary boilerplate ramp extensions have already been installed at Wahweap Main Ramp, but additional action is needed to maintain boater access throughout the summer and fall seasons. In partnership with park concessioner Aramark, work will begin this month to rehabilitate and improve the legacy Stateline Auxiliary Ramp, located between Stateline and Wahweap boat ramps.

Due to declining lake levels, the limited usability of the Wahweap Main Ramp, and construction activities at the Stateline Auxiliary Ramp, it is likely there will be periods of time as soon as late July when there are no open boat ramps in South Lake Powell. During periods of full ramp closures, boaters will be unable to launch or retrieve motorized vessels. The park will attempt to avoid full closures to the maximum extent possible.
