The city of Girona is only a 45 minute train ride from Barcelona, but has a completely different atmosphere. Girona’s medieval center is a maze of narrow streets and alleys that offer a chance to feel like you are visiting another time. This city can be done as a daytrip, or even serve as a home base for exploring the many towns of the Costa Brava.

Climbing Bell Rock today in Sedona, my son said they should have a national park here called “Gates of Heaven”. I have to say I agree; Sedona is one of the places that offers breathtaking scenery everywhere you look. Have you been to Sedona? What other places have you loved that offer fully immersive views?

Galapagos Day 4 - Final Day
We enjoyed one last day of snorkeling along a rift, where we saw dozens of types of fish as well as a 6-foot black-tipped reef shark! A short walk gave us the opportunity to see more Blue Footed Bo***es and Marine Iguanas. Then more swim and snorkel time at Las Grietas, which is a landlocked channel of crystal clear water where the kids had a great time jumping in. And finally, a visit to the Darwin Research Center to learn about the Tortoise breeding program and to see baby tortoises!

Galapagos Day 3: An hour walk through the national park today took us to pristine Tortuga Bay. While some members of our group took a surf lesson, we hung out with the famous Marine Iguanas! Then, off to a nearby bay where we kayaked among the mangroves and spotted turtles and small sharks!

Galapagos Day 2: On our second full day, we took a bumpy speedboat ride to the island of Santa Cruz, where the focus of the day was the Giant Tortoise. Dozens of these enormous reptiles wander the ranch freely. We learned how to know the gender (concave belly for males to make mating easier) and age of the tortoises (the smoother, the older). As an added bonus, we were able to explore a double lava tube to get a break from the heat!

Galapagos Day 1: On our G Adventures Family Land Galapagos Tour, our first full day on San Cristobal Island took us on a short hike where we saw Blue Footed Bo***es (from chicks through adults!), Frigates, Lava Lizards, Sally Light Foot Crabs, and a snake. Then, we got in the water to snorkel with Galapagos Sea Lions, Sea Turtles, rays, and a plethora of fish. As if that wasn't enough, we hung out at the beach, where some of the playful sea lions were very interested to see what we were up to (see comments), visited an interpretation center to learn more about the formation of the islands and their history in a global context, and finally relaxed on yet another beach teeming with sea lions!

Colombia is a country with a tremendous variety of experiences for travelers. Some of our family’s favorite experiences included a small coffee farm tour where we followed the process from field to cup, a hike to a pristine waterfall where we enjoyed a refreshing swim, paragliding over the countryside, and exploring the street art and food of Comuna 13 in Medellin. I would love to help your family discover Colombia!

Traveling is much more about the experiences than just ticking off boxes. On our last day in Cartagena, we did a cooking class where we toured the Bazurto market and then went to a family's home to learn how to make regional dishes (Posto Cartagenero, patacones, arroz de coco). Afterward, we enjoyed the fruits of our labor with them at their dining table!

8 Days of Cruising - Day 6 - Pre & Post Cruise
I always recommend arriving at least a day prior to your cruise in order to ensure flight delays won’t impact your vacation. (I actually learned this the hard way on a personal vacation when a missed connection to a red eye left us arriving 10 hours after the scheduled arrival time… we landed as our cruise was departing 😢).
But, aside from the logistical piece, arriving a few days early or staying in town after the cruise is a great way to extend the vacation and explore another place. This is especially true for European and Asian ports, but is really great most places. For example, we had an extra day today in Miami and used it to explore Everglades National Park. It was a very different experience compared to the rest of our trip, but very interesting and fun!

8 Days of Cruising - Day 5 - What’s Included?
Your cruise vacation offers A LOT of inclusions: lodging in the cabin of your choice, entertainment such as Broadway-style shows, comedians, and bands, onboard activities, and meals and some beverages. Some fares also include credit for shore excursions, drink packages, specialty restaurants, gratuities, and/or air credit.

8 Days of Cruising - Day 4 - Kids Programming
When cruising, we love to take advantage of the kids programming on board. In addition to all the fun activities to do on board, most major cruise lines also provide complimentary child care during specific hours each day. A sample schedule on our Symphony of the Seas sailing includes a morning session (9 am-12 pm), an afternoon session (2 pm to 5 pm) and an evening session (7 pm to 10 pm). There's even a late night session for a nominal fee, so parents can enjoy an adult evening out!

At Adventure Ocean, the junior cruisers are placed in 3-year age span groups to ensure that the activities are appropriate and kids are comfortable. This is no boring day care! They may do a science experiment, play a game, create a craft, or have a dance party!

While cruise lines vary in what age groups they provide care for, RCCL's complimentary childcare starts at ages 3 and up, but they do offer fee-based child care for ages 6 months and up with their Royal Tots and Babies program. And if mom and dad don't want to leave their littlest cruiser yet, there is a toddler play area they can enjoy together.

8 Days of Cruising - Day 3 - Excursions
One benefit to cruising is that you get to visit multiple ports during your vacation. Don’t feel limited by the excursions offered by your cruise line. I generally recommend getting away from the cruise crowd and booking small group excursions with my preferred suppliers. For a similar cost, you get a better service and experience, often at less touristed places, like this beautiful spot in St. Martin that we snorkeled with turtles today.

8 Days of Cruising - Day 2
What makes cruising such a great family friendly holiday? As a busy mom who spends a lot of energy planning our day to day lives, the last thing I want to do on vacation is more managing. Cruises offer such a variety of activities for all ages and interests it really takes the pressure off of parents and allows them to just enjoy their kids. In the last two days, we’ve mini-golfed, boogie boarded, participated in a family scavenger hunt, taken a drawing class and played in a soccer shoot out. We’ve also watched an ice skating show and a Broadway-style show. All of this took no effort to organize… all we had to do is show up!

8 Days of Cruising - Join me this week as I share tips and highlights of our Royal Caribbean cruise on the Symphony of the Seas.
Day 1 - In order to maximize your cruise experience, be sure to complete check-in as soon as you are able to do so (usually 30 days out). This gives you a better chance of snagging an early arrival slot so you can start vacationing sooner! Also, download your cruise line’s app. Not only will you be able to complete requirements such as the safety briefing, but you can access the daily schedule and plan ahead of time for those must-do activities!

Introduction

I am a travel advisor focused on family travel. I have always had a passion for exploring new places, and began traveling internationally at age 16 when I spent a summer abroad. Over the next two decades, my husband and I traveled throughout North America, South America, and Europe, gaining an appreciation for the different experiences one can get from different types of travel: trekking the Inca Trail, relaxing at an all-inclusive resort, sailing on a 50-foot yacht in Greece, and adventure travel in Costa Rica, to name a few. After having our son, we were committed to maintaining and sharing our passion for travel with him. Exploring the world as a family has been a way of life for us for the last 5 years. Some of our son’s favorite memories are from our travels: swimming in a private beachfront pool in Bali, exploring castles in Europe, seeing Tigers on safari in India, and riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad while watching the fireworks at Disney World. Travel defines our family.

I believe that family travel should be a priority for every family. Travel provides an opportunity for family members to connect to each other in meaningful ways. When families are removed from the stresses and routines of daily life, they are able to take the time to focus on each other. The shared moments and new experiences create new, lasting memories that are cherished by all. Of course, family travel also provides significant educational opportunities for learning about places, people and cultures that cannot be found in school. It also presents real life problem-solving tasks that allow children to apply what they have learned in school. Exchange rates, map reading, and communicating in other languages are all authentic learning activities. Finally, parents get the opportunity to see the world through new eyes. There is nothing quite like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they see new sights and gain new experiences.

As an experienced traveler and knowledgeable consultant, I know that there is no one right way to travel as a family: the right vacation is the one that provides the travel experience your family’s personality, needs and wants. Whether it is an active outdoor vacation, a culturally focused journey, a relaxing break by the beach, or even a combination of all three, I will create the holiday that your family is dreaming of. Contact me today for a consultation regarding your family’s next vacation.
