We constantly see the TV commercials advertising final expense insurance policies with premiums that never go up and coverage that never decreases. However, one must be cautious when purchasing those policies. Have you ever heard one of those commercials stating that your full coverage begins at day 1? Many times, it is not what you hear that gets you, but what you don’t hear. Not all final expense policies are the same. Some final expense policies have reduced coverage for up to 2 years which means you are not getting the full insurance you thought you were until, in this case, you have made payments for 2 years. In some policies, full coverage may not start for 3 years. Buyer beware! Allow me to discuss with you the difference between a “graded” death benefit policy and one that provides full coverage from the first day.

Most people believe that a final expense insurance policy is to cover their funeral bill only. However, most of us will have medical bills, car payments, credit card debt, housing payments (rent/mortgage) and utility bills still coming due in the months after our passing. How will those get paid? Will your family have to cover those payments? Not if you have a final expense insurance policy that will provide funds to your family that will relieve them from having to pay these out of their own pocket. Every one of us has different financial obligations to be met at our passing. Let’s talk about what is the right amount of insurance for you.

Wouldn't all of us like to leave some money to our loved ones when we pass away? Did you ever stop to think that your final expense insurance policy is designed to do just that? By putting away a small monthly amount now (premium payments) we can provide our loved ones with the much needed resources when we leave them (death benefit).

PAYMENT
Once you finalize your plans and the price, we can then make the best decision regarding payment. By planning ahead, you open the door to several payment options. You have heard the phrase “lock-in” the price. We need to have a face-to-face about that subject. Too often, families are faced with additional payments and costs after their loved one has passed. To prevent your family from facing that situation, contact me ASAP because we are not promised tomorrow.

PRICE
Knowing the plan and the purchases, we can then formulate a price for all the selections made. Prices vary widely, dependent upon your selections of service and merchandise. Pre-Planning allows you to take the time to explore options and make good decisions with your head whereas planning after the passing of a loved one forces one to make quick decisions with a broken heart. Talk to me about how to minimize the costs of your plans!

PURCHASE
Previously we discussed your desires for your services (The Plan), but the next step is deciding WHAT to purchase. Knowing the plan, we can then determine the merchandise needed to execute the plan. For example, if burial is desired, then we know that we must select a casket and vault. However, if cremation is chosen, then we may be talking about a totally different type of merchandise. Do we want an urn for keeping the cremated remains or will we be burying the cremated remains (which may dictate the purchase of an urn vault)? Will we be scattering the remains? And don’t forget, we must talk about the register book and memorial folders used at the visitation and service. We even offer a DVD to be shown during the visitation for family and friends to remember the good times you shared! Once again, your input is vital. We need to discuss this potentially expensive portion of the cost of your plans and find the best options for you on what you want to include in your wishes.

PLAN
For your service to be what you want it to be, we MUST know YOUR thoughts about the type of service you desire? Do you prefer a church service, service at the funeral home, or just a graveside service? Are you considering cremation? Do you wish to have a visitation? If so, would you prefer it the night before the service, or on the same day as the service (perhaps one hour prior to the service)? Do we want military honors for the veterans? Do you already have a cemetery space? Again, there are many, many details that your family would appreciate your input, while you still can. I have heard on many occasions “I wish I knew what she/he would have wanted”. I will be honored to discuss the many options with you.

PERSONAL INFORMATION
Your funeral director will obtain the certified death certificates for you and save your loved ones from the exhausting and uncomfortable duties surrounding such an event, but in order to do that, the we must have the appropriate information that is required on the death certificate form. These personal questions include birthdate, place of birth, parents’ names and place of birth, social security number, education, military service, employment, etc. Additionally, the funeral director must gather the family information that is to be mentioned in the obituary. Many have chosen to write their own! As you can imagine, it is much, much easier for us to answer these questions ourselves (during the “planning ahead” process) than to leave our loved ones to address them at the very stressful time of our passing. Just ask for a free “Planning Guide” that will help you get started documenting your information.

It’s been said that there are as many as 50 decisions or details that must be addressed at the time of a loved one’s passing. It is easy to see how preplanning significantly relieves our loved ones of that burden. Try to remember the planning process with “5 P’s”. One of the five P’s will be explained in a post every day this week for a better understanding of each one. Open conversations about these subjects are highly encouraged on this page. Please feel free to comment, send a private message, or e-mail me at [email protected]. I would love to talk about the options and see what is best for you!
