Christ the Redeemer, is a colossal statue of Jesus Christ situated at the summit of Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Here are some fascinating details about this iconic landmark:

Completion Date: The statue was completed in 1931.
Height: It stands 98 feet (30 meters) tall.
Design and Style: The statue is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world.
Symbolism: Christ the Redeemer is emblematic of both the city of Rio de Janeiro and the entire nation of Brazil.
Construction: The statue is made of reinforced concrete and is clad in a mosaic of thousands of triangular soapstone tiles.
Arms Span: Its horizontally outstretched arms span 92 feet (28 meters).
Base: The statue sits on a square stone pedestal base about 26 feet (8 meters) high, which is situated on a deck atop the mountain’s summit.

Historical Context: In the 1850s, the Vincentian priest Pedro Maria Boss suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado to honor Isabel, the princess regent of Brazil and the daughter of Emperor Pedro II. However, the project was never approved.

Competition and Design: In 1921, the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed building a statue of Christ on the 2,310-foot (704-meter) summit. A competition was held to find a designer, and the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was chosen. In collaboration with Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, Silva Costa amended the plan, resulting in the iconic figure of Christ with outstretched arms.
