SoftCell Regeneration

One of the best and most convenient differences between SoftCell portable water softeners and our competitors is how simple and easy it is to maintain. All regular maintenance is done through the attached filter. No need to go into the main resin tank. Read the simple steps below.

To regenerate the resin in your SoftCell, we use the Pre-Filter housing and Refillable Regen Cartridge as a brine-generating tank. To regenerate the SoftCell do the following:

1) Turn off the water and disconnect from the RV, Camper or Boat.

2) Remove the filter cartridge from the Pre-Filter housing.

3) Fill the Refillable Regen Cartridge with salt pellets, such as Morton softener salt pellets, and install back on the Pre-Filter cap.

4) Turn on the water at a slow rate (pencil or finger thickness) and run until the salt pellets have completely dissolved in the cartridge.

5) For the SoftCell Tote, one cycle is adequate to regenerate the system. This will take about 15-20 minutes.

6)For the SoftCell Standard or Dual, once the salt has dissolved, turn off the water. Refill the cartridge a second time and repeat the process. Total time should take about 25-30 minutes.

7) When complete, re-use or if needed, replace the filter with a new 10-20 micron cartridge. Run the water for a few minutes and check the water to make sure it does not taste salty.

You’re Done!

The system is now regenerated and ready to soften more water.

SoftCell Dimensions

Periodically, we are asked about sizing and dimensions of our SoftCell portable water softeners. Shown are our two standard and most popular configurations. The SoftCell Standard “Attached” and the SoftCell Tote.

Additionally, the ”Remote” has the same dimensions as the “Attached” except that the pre-filter is detached from the softener allowing it to move around. We supply a second 48” supply hose to connect the two. Weight with water is around 42 lbs.

The “Slim” has the same 6.5” diameter as the “Tote” shown below, but is 21” tall. Weight with water is 26-30 lbs.

UNDERSTANDING SOFTCELL

The Softcell softener has basically two parts, the Sediment Pre-Filter and the Resin tank. The resin tank contains small resin beads the attract Calcium and Magnesium minerals as water passes over them. The tank contains enough resin to attract approximately 15,000 grains of these minerals. The hardness of water is rated by grains per gallon (gpg). If, for example, your water was rated at 10 gpg, you would be able to use 1,500 gallons of water (15,000 divided by 10) before you would have to regenerate the resin in the resin tank. Regenerating is another term for washing the deposits off the resin beads to allow them to attract more minerals. Salt water (brine) is used to wash off the minerals.

When should I change my Water Filter?

A couple times a month, I get emails or calls about when to change the water filter?

Change the filter when you start to feel a reduction in flow. If you are recharging every two weeks, I’d say every second time you recharge, or about once a month. That will vary according to how your water is, but that would be about 1000-1500 gallons between changes.

If the filter cartridge looks overly grungy or starts to get green (algae related), clean out the housing, and rinse with about a tbsp of Clorox to a gallon of water, followed up by a fresh water rinse.

Be careful not to lose the o-ring between the clear housing and the cap it screws onto.
