The monument below commemorates U.S. soldiers at Fort Sumter during the first battle of the Civil War, in April of 1861. On the monument is one woman’s name: Ann Amelia Weitfieldt. She is listed as a “matron”.

We have limited information about Weitfieldt’s role in the Fort Sumter standoff. However, we know that she would have been in an isolated fort, surrounded by hostile cannons, in the months before the first shots. We also know that 45 women and children, family members of the soldiers, were at Fort Sumter early in the standoff.

Women shaped our history. We just need to know where to look. For this Women’s History Month, we’ll be shedding light on women’s roles in Charleston’s history. You’ll hear tales of women who served their country, assisted others, and shaped their society.

So come join us!

Image: Blue sky surrounds a rectangular monument at Fort Sumter. The monument reads, “In Memory of the Garrison Defending Fort Sumter During the Bombardment, April 12-14, 1861”, followed by a list of soldiers’ names. A light green dot has been placed above the words “Matron: Ann Amelia Weitfieldt”.

Flags are more than just pieces of colorful cloth flying high above the ground. They are reflections of people's hopes, dreams, histories, and sacrifices. One flag that embodies all of these aspects is that of the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry, famous for their courageous sacrifice on Morris Island.

The 54th Massachusetts lead the attack on Battery Wagner. During the attack, Sergeant William H. Carney discarded his musket to retrieve the regimental flag from a fallen comrade. He pressed onward under gunfire to plant the flag on the parapet of the sandy battery. When US forces were forced to retreat, Carney carried the colors all the way back to camp despite being severely wounded.

After the battle he reportedly said, “I only did my duty; the old flag never touched the ground.” Carney received the Medal of Honor in 1900 for his gallant actions on Morris Island, becoming one of the first African Americans to receive the honor.

Today, a small piece of the 54th Massachusetts regiment flag still remains; showcasing the same resilience of those who once carried the flag into battle.

“Birthdays belong to free institutions. We, at the South, never knew them. We were born at times: harvest times, watermelon times, and generally hard times. I never knew anything about the celebration of a birthday except Washington’s birthday, and it seems a little strange to have mine celebrated.”

- Frederick Douglass on his estimated 75th birthday.

Douglass, one of the most profound orators and leaders in American history, never knew his birthdate. The simple privilege of knowing his own true age was stripped from Douglass, as he was considered human property under the bo***ge of slavery.

He dedicated his life to breaking down the United State’s system of chattel slavery and to secure freedoms for Black people across the country. Douglass himself escaped bo***ge, spent years teaching literacy to Black men and women, fought for abolitionist support both in the U.S. and abroad, and wrote several newspapers and books. He recruited for the 54th Massachusetts during the Civil War which served in Charleston Harbor in 1863. Among the soldiers included his sons, Lewis and Charles, who fought for the United States.

Douglass asserted ownership and autonomy of himself through choosing his own birthday. But you may be wondering- Why Valentine’s Day? Douglass fondly recalls his mother referring to him as her “Little Valentine,” her love.

Today we celebrate this great American, whose legacy remains an inspiration today. (Pencil drawing of Douglass on tan colored parchment, courtesy of the Library of Congress)
