Wonderful video with captivating sounds of flamingos on the shores of the Yucatan Peninsula. The caption, in Spanish, translates in English: A very active morning at dawn shows us the great activity of many feeding birds, urgently demonstrating that we must take care of all these areas from the real estate boom and devastation that is currently being experienced in Yucatán♥️
⚠️Remember that tourism lives off nature and not the other way around, that is why it is very important to take care of it⚠️

National Corn Day in Mexico, Día Nacional del Maíz, is celebrated annually on September 29, to honor corn, or maíz, a sacred food and a central part of Mexican culture. Indigenous peoples in Mexico domesticated corn around 10,000 years ago; scientists believe that corn was developed from a wild grass called teosinte by the indigenous people living in central Mexico. There are more than 60 types of corn in Mexico. This day celebrates Mexico's ancestral food and the important role it plays in Mexican gastronomy.

“Las Amazonas de Yaxunah,” a compelling documentary featuring the remarkable spirit and determination of an extraordinary Mayan women's softball team from Yucatán Mexico. Narrated by Yalitza Aparicio, first Oscar nominated Indigenous Mexican actress (Best Actress), the film follows the inspiring journey of this team of 26 passionate players, aged 13 to 62, as they shattered gender stereotypes and overcame immense challenges to pursue their passion for softball. Emerging in 2018, players compete barefoot wearing traditional Maya dresses (huipiles). Every softball game starts with a Maya battle cry, ending with “¡mujeres fuertes!”(strong women).
Wearing traditional dress pays homage to their Maya culture and demonstrates that women can be both feminine and strong. Playing shoeless reinforces their bravery and connection to Mother Earth.
A trailer of the film, directed by U.S.-based filmmaker Alfonso Algara, is available free online. https://vimeo.com/944224084
The film made its debut at the 2024 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) Sunday, June 2: “In a small Mayan village in the heart of the Yucatán jungle in México, a group of women began playing [softball] with a makeshift bat carved out of a tree branch.”
In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of ESPN Deportes, the film is featured on the ESPN network during Hispanic Heritage Month US, from September 15 to October 15. After its premiere on linear television, Sept. 17, 8 p.m. EST/PST on ESPN2 and ESPN DEportes, the extended version of the documentary is available on ESPN+ in both languages. https://barrettmedia.com/2024/09/13/espn-to-commemorate-hispanic-heritage-month/
A major theme in the film is how players had to break stereotypes about women competing in sports, especially in an insular indigenous community where feminism doesn’t exactly flourish. “What ensued was a fight against sexism that would change their lives. Playing barefoot and in traditional Mayan dresses, with lack of resources, Las Amazonas became a traveling softball team that both challenged cultural norms and brought a new generation closer to their Mayan traditions. The documentary captures their trips across Mexico and their continued fight for equality in their town.” In September 2023, during Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, Las Amazonas were invited to Arizona to play an exhibition game at Chase Field against the Phoenix University Falcons, which they won 22–3, and to attend a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants, where they threw the ceremonial first pitch.

Still celebrating Mexico's Independence Day with this super video from Gring0 With A Green Bag. Love this! It's so good! Great history lesson with video and photos of the birthplace of Mexico's el Grito Cry of Independence in 1810 sparked by Father Miguel Hildago and Ignacio Allende in the town of San Miguel de Allende. Love the festive ending song too.
