I was out yesterday in the early morning with all of nature, the sound of running water, and no man-made distraction. I wanted a fire to sit around and warm me up, but in my hurry to have it I neglected to build it from the ground up. That always involves starting small, with paper and twigs, then b...

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. That’s a very peaceful feeling phrase, because we feel a bit of the eternity and oneness that it conveys. The cycle, the return to the seed and re-growth, is what nature is all about. On the ranch it is always evident when we ...

Come see us!

Summertime, and the livin' is easy now.......so goes the song, and for the most part all the animals on the ranch go along with it. In the middle of the day with the sun bearing down, you'll find all the ranch animals in the shadiest spots they they can find, not moving nor eating, just waiting pati...

New story up!

On a ranch or farm, where a person deals on a daily basis with animals, and their life and death, at some point there must be thought given to "what" the nature of life in animals is. Though I'm sure many will think otherwise, I feel that we humans are the only form of life given "awareness of self"...

It's a classic for a reason! Do you ever stop and think about what the world would look like if we truly followed the Golden Rule? If we as individuals, communities, nations, and religions chose kindness, empathy, and mutual respect for all, rather than allowing fear of the things we don't understand, or ideals that look different from ours cause us to dismiss and sometimes even harm each other? We can't change the world. But we can change our world. We challenge you (and ourselves) to keep this rule we all learned as children in the forefront of your mind as you navigate each day.

During this time of year we incubate duck and chicken eggs, and then raise them up after they have hatched. There's a definite appeal to baby poultry, a harmony to their peepings, and a beauty in their softness, before their downyness turns into real feathers. With our ducks, we raise them inside, w...

Sometimes building & maintaining connections in our personal lives & within our communities feels like too much. But it doesn't need to be. Here are 6 things to keep you going-- #1 is probably the most important. Remember why connection matters. We're better together is an oversimplification, but it's the truth. We live happier, healthier lives when we are sharing those lives with others.

Memorial Day stands as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the U.S. armed forces, rooted deeply in the nation’s history and evolving to honor all who have given their lives in service to their country. Remembrance doesn't always have to be somber. As we gather with our families, and take part in community events, we celebrate the values these heroes fought to protect.

This felt like the perfect verse for this weekend.
Many of us may be reflecting on the realities of war and the deep loss that so many have experienced--experience--even now. It's difficult to think of a time or a place that hasn't been exposed to the horrors of war. It would be easy to reflect on history, and on the events currently taking place across the globe, and despair that peace is not actually possible on this planet. May we choose to hope instead. May we choose resilience. May we choose to be watchful, not complacent. May we honor those who have sacrificed. May we honor those who sacrifice. May we never stop reaching for a future where peace is a reality for all.

This Feel Good Friday, we thought we'd share a good source for quick bites of kindness, in quote form, with fun illustrations. We especially love the simplicity of this one:
"We rise by lifting others."
-Robert Ingersoll
Who are you lifting up today?

The early spring has accelerated the biological clock of many of the farm animals. The chickens, peacock, and turkeys are all parading around trying to impress the females of their species. In the case of our one peacock, which is a male, he has decided that our chickens and guineas must just be sma...

."Guineas" are a type of fowl, similar to chickens but a little wilder and more independent. They are also called barnyard watchdogs because of the raucous noise they will make at any changes going on around them. Next to our peacocks people like them the best of all our "feathered friends". Every winter I have the best of intentions and a long list of jobs around the ranch and the houses. However, I seem to cycle like the seasons, and have trouble getting motivated until the springtime arrives. I was reading words from Elizabeth Sherrill in Guideposts this morning about change. One of the main things that we may see in nature is the constant change in everything around us. If it is living, as in people, plants, and animals, it is constantly growing, never remaining as it was, ever. If the....
