Nara, once the capital of ancient Japan, has been home to hundreds of deer for centuries. Considered messengers of the gods, the herd is a national treasure. Our Bucketeers are touring Japan and our guide, Junko-san, arranged for a special call of the deer. The herd came running to us where we had crackers ready for feeding. The deer have learned over the years to bow for their feed. After a while deer and Bucketeers alike were bowing away.

Franz Gruber, who was the church organist, wrote the peaceful melody in 1818 to accompany a poem written by his friend Fr. Joseph Mohr from the neighboring town of Oberndorf. They first performed the hymn together at the midnight mass that year in Fr. Mohr's tiny parish chapel of St Nicholas.
