Well the big boys are back in town! These Bighorn rams came down out of the hills several weeks ago as they prepare for the annual rut. This was a small part of a group of 19 rams on that early November morning.

Just gotta love river otters! Viewed on a Yellowstone Wonders tour with the Hancock family on April 13th. And yes, the river ice/snow was still that thick 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Small video clip of Easter Bear. We know there is a bison carcass under all of that snow/ice and apparently so does this bear. The bear didn't get to it this morning but sure he'll be back to try again soon.

EASTER BEAR! This is the first grizzly bear we have seen this year. It's about a month later than normal but we'll take it! And yes, there is that much snow still on the ground in Yellowstone.

Shortly after first light this morning on a tour with some fine folks from North Carolina, we came upon this brute. Some video of our grizzly encounter coming up shortly.

Happy Easter everyone!

Even the bison are anxiously awaiting the interior road openings next month.

The roads to Old Faithful and to the Canyon area from Mammoth Hot Springs are scheduled to open April 21, 2023. The road from the North Entrance (at Gardiner, MT) to Mammoth Hot Springs and the Northern Range is open year round.

"Courting Grizzlies"

Another sure sign of spring arriving in Yellowstone is when the grizzly bears begin courting. While on a private tour on May 15, 2022, we came across this pair of grizzlies. The size difference between the male (on the left) and the female bear is striking. Video of some of the behavior we observed will be posted shortly.

One of the sure signs of Spring arriving in Yellowstone is the first bison calf (red dog) being spotted. We found this precious red dog on April 7th on the Northern Range during a private tour celebrating Lynne's 70th birthday! Bison calving season usually begins later in April but there are always a few early arrivals.

(It was around noon and the temperature was 42°F but the heatwaves were bad as you can see in the video. Plus we kept our distance as not to stress the newborn - the video was done through our spotting scope).

If you are considering staying at one of the lodges inside Yellowstone, you need to read about the changes to the reservation window.

Yellowstone's advance reservation window will change beginning with Summer 2023 stays.

Early during this private tour, we found 3 grizzlies around an old bison carcass. This bear here could never get to the carcass as he was constantly runoff by the other bears. So he wandered off, then this happened. Be sure to watch to the end.

(The scope got bumped at one point, so sorry that the video moved up an down).

This is the reason that we include some of
the Yellowstone National Park rules and regulations in our pre-tour information letter. And why we discuss staying on the boardwalks and designated trails in the thermal areas during our safety briefing at the beginning of our tours.

If you disregard these rules you could be injured, killed or wind up in court in Mammoth Hot Springs.

The boardwalks are there to protect the visitors and to protect the Park resources from damage. Let's everyone do our part to stay safe and protect Yellowstone for future generations. Please recreate responsibly!

News Release from the U.S. Department of Justice District of Wyoming: Connecticut woman sentenced for walking on thermal area in Yellowstone National Park.

Acting United States Attorney Bob Murray announced yesterday that Madeline S. Casey, age 26 of New Hartford, Connecticut, was sentenced to seven days in jail for walking on thermal ground at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. In addition, she was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, $40 in fees and a $1,000 community service payment to the Yellowstone Forever Geological Resource Fund. Casey appeared in front of Magistrate Judge Mark L. Carman in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming, on August 18, 2021, for sentencing.

It has been an incredibly busy summer in Yellowstone - July saw over 1,000,000 visitors! I have been very behind in posting here but will start to correct that this morning.

We found this bull elk in Mammoth on the evening of August 26th. All the velvet has been rubbed off his antlers, he was following the cow elk around and then started bugling. It sounded like a smaller bull bugled back, then the big guy here took off looking for his potential rival. The elk rut has begun! Be sure to turn on the sound. (The video was taken from the safety of inside the Suburban.)
