This wonderful short, featuring the voice of the late, great Ed Asner as Carl Fredricksen and Pixar’s Bob Peterson as the voice of Dug, was released a year ago on June 16 with Pete Sohn’s feature “Elemental.”

It’s a tear-inducing masterpiece that also offers a good dose of healthy laughs as Dug helps a somewhat reluctant Carl prepare for a date.

Directed by Peterson, “Carl’s Date” is a sweetly sentimental short that I gladly revisit a few times a year as it’s available on Disney+.

I can help your book your magical vacation at the Poly today!

If you’ve never stayed at the Polynesian Village resort at Disney World, you may be totally unaware of a special gift received upon check-in: a beautiful flower lei! This tradition dates back to the earliest days of Walt Disney World. We are shocked it has continued this long!

Birds of a feather finally get together

Here’s a rare photo originally posted four years ago of Walter Lantz (left), and Walt Disney, both proud producers of animated cartoons.

It appears that Walt may have attended a special event honoring Lantz’ 25th anniversary at Universal Studios.

Disney’s most successful animated shorts character at the time was Donald Duck. Lantz is best remembered for his cartoons featuring Woody Woodpecker, Chilly W***y and Buzz Buzzard.

Happy Birthday, Donald Duck!!

Donald Duck’s Radio City Music Hall premiere was 90 years ago on 06/07/1934

From our friend, Disney author and historian JB Kaufman: "For years, Disney fans have celebrated the 9th of June as Donald Duck's ‘birthday’ because that was the official release date of ‘The Wise Little Hen’ in 1934.

In fact, however, that classic cartoon opened at Radio City Music Hall two days earlier, on the 7th — 90 years ago today.”

This 99-year-old magazine clipping from 1925 quite likely was the first published biography of Walt Disney.

By David Lesjak
From my archive, what I believe is the earliest published biography of Walt Disney after he moved west to California in 1923.

This item was published in a June 7, 1925, Hollywood trade magazine. Note the Studio address as well: the move to the new studio on Hyperion Avenue in Los Feliz was still about eight months away.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS LADY? 🤔
It’s none other than 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗮 from the crystal ball in The Haunted Mansion! 👻

𝗟𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗯𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 was a pivotal figure at Walt Disney Imagineering. Born on August 9, 1925, in Los Angeles, she began her career at Disney in the ink and paint department, working on classic animated films.

➡️ Her talents were quickly noticed, leading her to transition into the design and development of theme park attractions. Leota is best known for her work on Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, where she served as the model and voice for Madame Leota, the floating head inside the crystal ball in the séance room. This iconic character became a beloved part of the attraction, known for its eerie yet captivating presence.

Leota Toombs also contributed to attractions such as “𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱”, the 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺, and 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻. For Pirates, she was involved in the creation of several animatronic figures and scenic elements for the attraction. Her contributions helped bring the beloved pirate adventure to life, adding to her legacy as a key figure in the development of Disneyland’s iconic attractions. 🏴‍☠️

Her birth name was Leota Anne Wharton. She married her first husband, Harvey Toombs, taking his last name and becoming Leota Toombs. After their marriage ended, she later married Hugh Thomas, which is why she is also known as Leota Thomas.

Leota Toombs passed away on December 21, 1991, but her legacy continues through her significant contributions to Disney’s theme parks.

✨ Leota’s daughter, Kim Irvine, followed in her mother’s footsteps and also became a prominent figure at Walt Disney Imagineering. She has worked extensively on preserving and updating various Disneyland attractions, ensuring her mother’s legacy and the classic Disney magic endure. Notably, Kim played a key role in refurbishing the Haunted Mansion and even portrayed Madame Leota in the “Haunted Mansion Holiday” overlay. 🙌😃🏰

51 years ago today Tom Sawyer Island opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Walt Disney spent some of his childhood in Missouri which is Mark Twain country and Walt loved both the area and the Twain’s writings so much that he wanted them part of the Frontierland. Sadly, Walt didn’t live to see his expansive dream of “The Florida Project” come to fruition in 1971 and Tom Sawyer Island following in 1973 but his brother, Roy made sure his legacy would remain.

Walt Disney’s “𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱” at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

Walt saw the World’s Fair as an opportunity to showcase his advancements in Audio-Animatronics technology. The ride featured over 300 animatronic dolls, demonstrating the potential for intricate, synchronized movement and storytelling in theme parks.

“it’s a small world” embodied Walt Disney’s vision of using entertainment as a tool for education and inspiration, conveying a message of global peace and unity through a charming, family-friendly attraction. 😃❤️
