On this day in 1608, John Smith and his crew sailed a river he called "Cuskarawaok" - today known as the Nanticoke River. In "A Generall Hitsorie of Virginia," Smith describes shots fired between his men and the American Indians on the shore. However, after offering copper and other gifts, "two or three thousand men women & children" came to trade with the strangers. Smith would continue to voyage along the Bay's estuaries throughout the remainder of the summer.
