Today was the 98th Annual Natchitoches Christmas Festival, and let’s be real—it was cold, humid, and damp. But amid the miserable weather, the festival pulsed with life.
I was there with my camera, capturing the chaos: the parade floats cutting through the chill, people huddled together, trying to find warmth in the festive atmosphere, or that was just everyone in Story Brew at the same time demanding hot beverages. The fireworks lit up the sky, a stark contrast to the dreariness, reminding us that beauty can emerge even in the bleakest of moments.
It was a good day, despite the weather. A reminder that the spirit of the season thrives, even when the elements don’t play nice. Here’s to the moments that bind us together, wrapped in layers of warmth while celebrating life.
EDIT: For anyone wondering specifics; shot on Canon EOS R5, 24mm, f/11, 10 second exposure, running the Polar Pro Everyday CPL+Mist filter, and post processing in LrC.

If you’ve never been to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival, let me set the scene.
Twinkling lights hang from every tree, the Cane River flickering with their reflections. The smell of funnel cakes and carnival food snakes through the air, mingling with the unmistakable tang of smoke from grills along the riverbank. It’s charming, sure — but also chaotic. The kind of chaos small towns do best when they decide to go big.
This photo is from last year: the Church Street Bridge glowing in holiday lights, fireworks exploding high above, and the river catching their every shimmer. But here’s the part they don’t put on the postcard: rain. A fine mist that lingered just long enough to turn everything damp, from my jacket to the front element of my lens. It clung to the smoke from the fireworks, refusing to let it drift, and for a moment, I hated it. The haze softened the scene, blurred the lines. My fingers were cold, my camera wet, and I was convinced it was all going to ruin the shot.
But looking back, the imperfections made the photo. The raindrops on my lens bent the light into shapes I couldn’t have planned if I tried - fractured patterns that brought the image to life in ways I didn’t expect. It’s the kind of serendipity that only happens when you lean into the moment, however messy it gets.
This week, I’m diving back into the festival — one photo at a time. From the glowing riverbank to the madness of the vendor booths, the stillness before the crowds, and the fireworks that turn the night into day. It’s a love letter to small-town magic, and a reminder that sometimes, the rain-soaked, smoke-filled moments are the ones that stay with you the longest.
