Remember- Sea turtles dig the dark...

We have a favor to ask…

Now that our local sea turtle nests are starting to hatch, we would like to ask everyone staying in oceanfront properties to turn off any indoor or outdoor lights that may be visible from the beach. We are asking this favor because when the hatchlings emerge from their nests, they are very sensitive to light and can become disoriented and follow these residential lights up into the dunes, rather than head down into the ocean. So could you please help us ensure that all our local hatchlings safely make it into the ocean and turn off all outdoor lights on decks and pools, and close the blinds or drapes on all levels of your house after dark ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Here’s an interesting collection of beaches.

And, we know our favorite.

From the Hawaiian Islands to the wild Pacific Northwest and quintessential New England dunes, you might consider planning your next trip around one of these U.S. beaches that are difficult to access while delivering lots of rewards for those who make the effort to get there.

We love to see creativity with sand castles… but please don’t build them on the waterline. This is a driving lane north of MP 17 and an emergency vehicle lane for the entire stretch of the beach. Make sure you flatten them out and fill in any holes before you leave for the day. They become driving hazards and wildlife hazards after dark. Help us keep everyone safe!

No apples for these horses!

Over the last couple days we have gotten several calls about people feeding horses apples. Yes, law enforcement has been involved. But a citation written after the fact isn't going to help the horse after it's already been fed. We shouldn't be getting these calls in the first place - please do not be selfish and short-sighted. Your actions have long-lasting consequences that our organization, our community, and the herd have to deal with after you go home. Losing one horse out of a population of only 100 is a devastating blow, the effects of which last for generations.

We are not asking you to sacrifice anything - just leave the horses alone! Watch them from a distance and do not get close or interact with them. There are signs everywhere. It is very, very hard to believe that anyone who spends any time on the 4x4 doesn't know by now that feeding the horses is illegal and dangerous. If you want these horses to be here next year when you vacation, and in five years, a decade from now...it is up to you to follow the rules and help keep them safe. The horses face so many challenges to their survival that we can't control. Everyone who visits needs to start doing a better job of not putting them into unnecessarily dangerous situations.

We realize that we are largely preaching to the choir by posting here, but maybe if the message is shared widely enough it will hit the people who really need to see it. It's not even Memorial Day yet, and we are already extremely concerned for the rest of the summer. If you are on the 4x4 and you witness someone feeding, petting, or putting themselves or the horses in danger, please call 252-232-2216 so that a deputy can be dispatched to the location. They will also let us know so that we can keep an eye on any horses that may have been fed.

There are lots of resources available in our Community Toolkit: https://www.corollawildhorses.com/community-wild-horse-toolkit/ Homeowners, please consider placing information in your houses so that your renters know the rules and why they are important.

Hopefully 2022 is the first year in a few that we do not have to remove or euthanize a choking horse, but based on the behavior we've seen so far this spring, it's not looking promising. Please don't be the reason a horse dies or has to be taken out of the wild. Just follow the rules, watch the horses in their natural environment without interfering with them, and treat this place the same way you would treat your own home. It's not asking a lot of you, but it means a LOT to the horses.

(Pictured is Danny, who was fed an apple and subsequently choked and died in 2020. He was only a year old.)

We are hearing already this season of risky (and by the way, illegal) behavior around the horses by visitors of the northern beaches. Please read - and remember to stay AT LEAST 50' away from the wild horses - for their sake and yours.

As we head into a weekend that’s shaping up to be beautiful and busy, please remember to give the horses plenty of space. Over the last couple weeks we have really seen an increase in dangerous behavior from visitors to the 4x4. The rules are in place to keep you and the horses safe. The law states that you must stay 50ft away at all times, and if one of our staff tells you that you should move it’s because we are trying to keep you out of harms way. Stallions are fighting and unpredictable; if you are in their path you could get hurt and we are trying to prevent that from happening. Our staff knows the herd dynamics and can interpret behavior, and may see things that you do not. Please trust that we are not trying to ruin your moment or your photograph - quite the opposite! We want you to have a wonderful visit and see the horses safely in their natural habitat.

Wise words here.

This was today under light snow. This little guy, just months old, bravely wanted to know what I was up to. As much as I wanted to engage, I backed away and got back into my car. As soon as I took my first step backward, he stopped, raised his head high, and snorted out his offense at my retreat then walked back into the brush and resumed his lunching. Wild animals must be left wild, even if they approach us. That comfort can result in them having to be removed from the herd or worse, it can kill them should someone feed them something outside their natural diet. Never discount a human's poor decision-making skills. Corolla Wild Horses

Today is . Of course, every day is day of the horse around here. 😉 The Banker horses of North Carolina are a cultural and historic icon, and their story is the story of the Outer Banks. Hardy and adaptive, able to eek out a living on a barrier island where the environment doesn’t make it easy, they’ve not only survived, but thrived. They’ve lived here for more than 500 years and with your help, we are dedicated to making sure they will be here for another 500 more.

Please read and share.

We are currently seeing a major influx of horse-human interactions, firsthand on the beach and across various Facebook groups. We follow up with the sheriff's department when these posts are brought to our attention and citations can be issued based on this evidence. We take this very seriously, as does local law enforcement.

It is illegal to approach, touch, feed, or otherwise harass the wild horses. You can read the full ordinance here:https://www.corollawildhorses.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/wild-horse-ordinance.pdf

The law applies to everyone. Your actions have an impact - all it takes is one apple from one person to kill a horse. If you see someone breaking the law, please call 252-232-2216 immediately.

If you are visiting the Currituck Outer Banks this holiday weekend, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the laws and ordinances in place to keep you and the horses safe, protect our fragile ecosystem, and keep the beach and sand roads passable.

Remember, you must stay at least 50ft away from the horses at all times. It is illegal to approach, pet, feed, or harass the horses in any way. Citations will be issued! If you witness someone breaking the law, or putting themselves or the horses in danger, please call 252-232-2216 so that law enforcement can be dispatched and CWHF notified if necessary.

Thank you for helping us keep the horses safe!

How many times do we have to say it? It is illegal to get within 50ft of the horses. If a horse comes up to you, walk away from it. Do not encourage this kind of behavior. These foals are at a critical stage of development and this kind of interaction is incredibly detrimental and dangerous. You’re also putting yourself at great risk of being attacked by a protective stallion or mare. You aren’t special, you aren’t above the law, and you do not care about the horses if you think this is ok. There is absolutely no excuse for ignorance. Every single person who drives onto this beach goes past many signs saying it is illegal. Please obey the law and keep our horses safe and free.

Important reminder about digging on the beach -

🏖 With a wide-open beach full of sand beneath our feet this summer, it can be a challenge for some beachgoers to resist the urge to pick up a shovel and start digging – sometimes aiming to create a hole for kids to play in. Whatever the reasons, it is important to recognize the immense danger potential associated with digging holes on the beach and understand that it can lead to serious injury or death. Not only is it dangerous, but the county also has an ordinance in place regulating the digging of deep holes on the beach.

If you do choose to dig a hole, please remember to fill it back in so it does not become a danger to other beachgoers, emergency responders, beach drivers, and marine life 🐢

Here are some good rules to follow:

✅ Never dig a hole deeper than the knees of the smallest person in your group
✅ Always fill in the holes you do dig each time you leave the beach for any period, whether during the day or at night
✅ Do not dig near the dune line or foreshore where emergency vehicles regularly travel
✅ Never attempt to dig a tunnel on the beach

A reminder...

Building sandcastles and digging holes is a lot of fun. But please - not by the waterline or dunes where we drive. And when you leave, please leave inly footprints. At night, this castle and its moat can cause significant vehicle damage if someone hits it. And it was built right on the high tide line, which is where traffic and emergency vehicles drive.
