If you can keep a secret out here then ‘you ain’t Tybee’, but we did our darnedest.

This moment right here was nothing short of a dream come true. Thank you Guy Fieri, Citizen Pictures (the best crew!), Food Network, our Sundae Cafe staff, amazing customers and community.

Twenty years ago two Tybee kids opened up a cafe. What an incredible cherry on top this experience has been for us in celebrating that friendship, and every moment that’s led us here. We love you all, and are so proud to announce our appearance on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this Friday night!

Sea turtle nesting season starts TOMORROW, MAY 1!

With your help, we can ensure these beautiful creatures have the best chance at laying a successful nest. One of the most important things to remember is that bright white lights disturb both the nesting females and hatching babies, so PLEASE remember to leave your flashlight at home when walking the beach this summer and early fall, and turn off any porch/patio lights if visible from the beach. If you must use a light, use a red light! You can buy them specifically or put a red cellophane film over your normal light.

Through February and March of 1862, the US Army constructed 11 artillery batteries (positions) on Tybee Island. They stared down Fort Pulaski across the South Channel of the Savannah River. How did soldiers accomplish this feat?

First, gun-platforms, magazines, and shelters were built to house artillery and gun crews. Once offloaded from ships, cannons and mortars (weighing as much as 15,000 and 17,000 lbs. respectively) needed to be positioned. Teams of 250 men hauled artillery with ropes, dragging each weapon through the sand with great difficulty.

Artillery was then hoisted underneath sling carts and wheeled towards the Federal batteries. The West end of Tybee Island was particularly tough; wheels slipped off the timbers and sank up to their hubs in soft mud. These tasks were performed under the cover of darkness, with progress partially camouflaged every morning before dawn.

By April, after weeks of grueling labor, the US Army was ready. They were determined to reclaim Fort Pulaski.

Help support our Tybee Sea Turtle Project and our resident sea turtles, Westie and Ossie, by participating. Runners receive a t-shirt 👕, a medal 🏅, and admission 🎟️ to the center after the race!
