A mysterious phenomenon occured in Alaska's early morning skies amidst the widespread auroras of April 14-15. We were fortunate and very mystified to observe it from the Elliit Highway, north of Fairbanks.

COPPER REDS
A brilliant aurora curtain radiates pure energy over the Copper River Basin, Alaska, on November 7, 2022 at 5:25 am. On the moonlit horizon the Wrangell Mountains, including Mts. Drum, Sanford & Wrangell (left-to-right), get dwarfed by immense columns of auroral light that stretch from 50 miles above Earth at the green base, to 300 miles high in the red zone. The solar wind interacting with Earth’s magnetic field is the energy source that charges this battery in the sky.

I can't remember the last time I saw real-live red northern lights, so this put a big smile on my frozen face (it was -14° F). Aurora colors tend to pop extra brilliantly on photographs like this. I could tone it down a bit to better emulate reality, but I don’t want to because in my reality, this was a rare glimpse at colorful & mind-blowing naked-to-the-eye reds!

p.s. prints of “Copper Reds” can be ordered at https://shop.aurorahunter.com/standard-photo-sizes.html... but stay tuned, a little birdie told me there’s gonna be an Aurora Hunter Veterans Day sale.
