Keeping Our Waterways Clean with Trash Trouts! 🗑️

If you've ever noticed trash accumulating in our local waterways, you're not alone. From historical dumping sites to everyday litter, debris often finds its way into our streams and rivers. That's where our Trash Trouts come in!

Not only does this contribute to the beautification of our environment, but it also plays a crucial role in protecting the health of the Piney Creek Watershed.

"Trash Trouts are an easy-to-understand solution that make a big difference in keeping our waterways clean and safe for all species," said Nate Sydnor, Executive Director.

We're proud of this initiative and committed to expanding it further. By pulling plastics and other debris out of the water, we're making strides toward a cleaner, healthier watershed.

Want to learn more about how you can help? Reach out to us or join one of our upcoming cleanup events!

Feeling on top of the world at the end of the trail: CDT Ambassador Katie “Double Dip” Jackson has finished the Continental Divide Trail!

She brought her big smile all the way from Mexico to Canada, and we couldn’t could be happier to see her celebrate.

“The trail has taught me that, yes, it’s necessary to embrace the brutality. But, above that, it’s important to find joy in the journey regardless of the challenge.”

Happy trails! 🤠

We're thrilled to share the success of our recent Trout in the Classroom project with Daniels Elementary! 🌱 Under the guidance of teacher Devin Graham, students had the unique opportunity to grow fingerling trout from eggs, learning about aquatic ecosystems, conservation, and the importance of protecting our local waterways.

With the equipment, coolers, filters, and everything else provided by our team, these young environmental stewards nurtured the trout, which were then released into different parts of the Piney Creek Watershed. The goal? To help restore wild trout populations by giving these fingerlings a chance to take hold, reproduce, and thrive in our local streams.

"The more you spread the seeds of conservation, the more they take hold. By involving students in this hands-on project, we're not only supporting trout populations but also inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders." —Nate Sydnor, Executive Director

We're excited to expand this program! We've already begun conversations with Coal City Elementary and applied for additional grant funding to bring Trout in the Classroom to even more schools next year. 🐟

Stay tuned for updates as we continue to grow this program and make a positive impact on our watershed!

📚 Add a compelling piece of Appalachian historical fiction to your collection. 📖

Denise Giardina’s Unquiet Earth tells the powerful story of the coalfields of Blackberry Creek, West Virginia, and the people who live there, grappling with oppression, poverty, and disaster. Spanning the 1930s to the 1980s, this novel weaves a tale of love, loss, and activism, focusing on Dillon Freeman's fight against the coal industry and the lasting impact on his family and community.

This deeply moving novel is available at the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum bookstore, part of our collection of Appalachian literature. Don’t miss out on this essential read!
