Upon recommendation of the Chief of Naval Operations William S. Benson, USN, in February 1917 that eight aeronautic coastal stations be established, the Naval Air Station at Hampton Roads, Virginia was established as an air training station and patrol base to conduct experimental work in seaplane operations at the Naval Operation Base.

In January 1918, the Experimental and Test Department located at Pensacola, Florida transferred to Hampton Roads due to the remoteness of Pensacola's location to principal manufacturing and industrial areas. The naval air station existed as a separate command until the Navy consolidated it with the Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia in 1999.

Upper Wolfsnare, historically called Brick House Farm until 1939, is a colonial-era brick home built, probably about 1759, in Georgian style by Thomas Walke III in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Thomas III was a major in the British Army. His son, Thomas Walke IV, was a member of the Virginia Ratifying Convention of 1788, which voted to ratify the United States Constitution. Walke IV was one of two representatives from Princess Anne County.

The house acquired its name because of its location next to Wolf Snare Creek, on the south side of its upper part. The house sits in a high noise area between Naval Air Station Oceana and Interstate 264. It was almost knocked down to make room for an access ramp for the interstate, but preservationists managed to save the property.

The lane to the house at 2040 Potter's Road is lined by many trees, including crepe myrtles. The house is open to the public on a very limited basis. The view of the house is mostly obscured by trees from Potter's Road but beyond the trees it is an open, flat, marshy, area.

The house is in two stories and built with Flemish bond brickwork. A passage runs through the center of the house. It has raised paneling and wainscoting. The house was listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register (Virginia Historic Landmark) in 1974 and the US National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Servicing a Grumman F4F Wildcat, NAS Norfolk, 1942

The land on which Naval Station Norfolk is located was originally the site of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition. During this exposition, high-ranking naval officers agreed that this site was ideal for a naval activity.

A bill was passed in 1908 proposing Congress allow $1 million for the purchase of the property and buildings, but it died when the Assistant Secretary of the Navy was given a choice between this property and a new coal ship. He replied that a new ship was an absolute necessity.

However, immediately after the United States entered World War I in April 1917, the Secretary of the Navy was persuaded to buy the property.

A bill was passed for the purchase of 474 acres; it set aside the sum of $1.2 million as payment for the property and an additional $1.6 million for the development of the base, including piers, aviation facilities, a recruit training station, a submarine base and recreation grounds for fleet personnel.

In the midst of that workload, NNSY repaired the U.S. Navy’s own warships, damaged from bombs, torpedoes and kamikaze attacks alike. These included the heavy cruiser USS Chester (CA-27), damaged near Guadalcanal in October 1942 when a Japanese torpedo hit midship on the portside and smashed the forward engine rooms, killing 11 and wounding 12 more.

When the destroyer USS Kendrick (DD-612) had its stern heavily damaged by a German dive bomber in September 1943, the shipyard built a new one.

After the light cruiser USS Honolulu (CL-48) suffered a portside torpedo attack prior to the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, NNSY restored it to become a training ship.

The Navy yard made a new bow for USS Lindsey (DM-32) after a dramatic and deadly Pacific battle in April 1945 with two kamikaze planes striking the vessel, killing 57 and wounding 57 others.

Sometimes multiple repair jobs arrived on the same day, as in the case of USS Hobson (DD-464) and USS Sangamon (CVE-26) in June 1945, both victims of kamikaze attacks. Whether it be smashed hulls, crippled machinery, or critical electrical equipment to repair, Norfolk Naval Shipyarders married ingenuity and efficiency to quickly fix vessels and return them to sea.

Gate 2, Naval Station Norfolk, 1950s

“Known officially as Naval Operating Base until January 1, 1953, the name of the installation was changed to Naval Station Norfolk.”

In June 1941, the personnel count at Naval Station Norfolk increased once again. There were approximately 10,000 new recruits at the Naval Training Station, 15,500 officers and enlisted on station, and 14,400 Sailors assigned to ships homeported in Norfolk.

The increased pace of operations made it necessary to further extend runways and provide more parking areas. To accommodate this requirement, an additional 400 acres was acquired. By 1943, the Naval Air Station had become the hub for a series of outlying air-fields. As such, Naval Air Station Norfolk’s biggest contribution to the winning of World War II was in the training it provided to a wide variety of allied naval air units.

Known officially as Naval Operating Base until January 1, 1953, the name of the installation was changed to Naval Station Norfolk.

17/07/2024

From January 1, 1940, shortly after war erupted in Europe, to its end with Japan on V-J Day August 14, 1945, the shipyard repaired, altered, converted, and worked on approximately 6,850 naval vessels, recorded as more than 27 million tons of naval might. In the midst of urgent repairs and conversions, more than 100 new ships and landing craft were built, and millions of dollars in manufactured products were churned out for the Navy.

To perform its unprecedented amount of work, the shipyard—then known as Norfolk Navy Yard—more than doubled its physical size, turbocharged its productive capacity, and bolstered the workforce from 7,625 at war’s inception to a peak of 42,893 in 1943. In all, this bigger, bloodier sequel to the Great War would have lasting impact at NNSY that still reverberates today.

Torpedo boats in the wet dock at Norfolk Navy Yard, 1905
Library of Congress

In 1908, an appropriation bill was passed granting $1 million for building costs and to purchase the property, but that bill would die when the Assistant Secretary of the Navy was given a choice between a new base and a coal ship.

He went with the decision of a coal ship, deciding that it was needed more at the time. After the U.S. entered WW1 the Secretary of the Navy was persuaded this time to buy the property. Finally a bill was passed to buy all 474 acres of land. The bill set aside $1.6 million for development costs and preparing the land.

In the following six months, the Fifth Naval Headquarters and the Naval Operating Base (NOB) were constructed along with numerous other buildings and infrastructure. By Armistice Day in 1918, 35,000 personnel occupied the base.
