@marissa.daily 👇 5 Fun Things to Do in Norfolk, Virginia! 👇
It’s a city by the water, but it’s never watered down. 😌💅 I took the Northeast Regional train on @AmtrakVA down to Norfolk - here are 5 FUN things I did on my solo getaway!
⚡NEON District⚡
Experience the “New Energy Of Norfolk” in the NEON District, the first official art district in the city! 🎨 Street murals galore, local businesses, galleries, and eclectic restaurants make up the fabric of this bustling creative hub. It's a great photo op! 📸
⚓ Battleship Wisconsin ⚓
While I don’t consider myself a “history buff,” this is a slice of history that anyone could find interesting! 🧠 The U.S.S. Wisconsin is one of the largest and last built by the Navy, having served in WWII. Roaming the different halls and reflecting on what life was like on the ship for over 2,000+ members of the crew was incredible.
🖼️ Chrysler Museum of Art 🖼️
The best part about visiting this museum? Admission is FREE! 🤑 The Chrysler Museum has an always-growing collection of art spanning styles from contemporary to glassworks. Next door, their Perry Glass Studios hosts free glassblowing demonstrations too! 🔍
⛵ The American Rover ⛵
Set sail on the calm waters of the Elizabeth River on a 19th century-style Schooner by the name of American Rover. The Sunset Cruise is a scenic way to explore the working harbor and waterfront, then enjoy nature’s spectacle as the sun goes down. 🌅
🛍️ Selden Market 🛍️
Rumor has it, every time you buy from a local business, a real person does a happy dance. Get those happy dances going by shopping and supporting local businesses as Selden Market! S'mores flamed to order, anyone!?

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
▪️Built in 1739, the church is the only colonial-era building in Norfolk to survive the many wars the city has seen.
▪️It still carries a centuries-old cannonball embedded in its bricks, a memento from Lord Dunmore in 1776.
▪️And there are said to be more spiritual reminder she of the past within and around its walls.
👻The most prevalent sighting is a figure that appears in the graveyard, thought to be the ghost of Dr. Nicholas Albertson Okeson who tragically died of Malaria in 1882. He was a humble servant for 26 years and was buried at St. Paul’s. Perhaps he still feels there is work to be done.

Fort Monroe was finished in 1834, though some form of fortification had existed at the site since 1609 as its location was considered fundamental to the defense of the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton Roads, and more specifically the navigational channel that connected them.
▪️During the Civil War the fort was a critical Union stronghold, despite the fact that Virginia was a secessionist state, and played a crucial role in freeing southern slaves which earned it the moniker “Freedom’s Fortress.”
▪️On September 15, 2011 Fort Monroe was decommissioned and declared a National Monument.
👻Those who have gone to the Fort have often come back with reports of strange phenomena. Many apparitions have been spotted at the fort, the most famous of which include Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, who was imprisoned here after being accused of plotting to assassinate Lincoln. Davis’ ghost walks the ramparts at night and his wife’s spirit is said to reside here as well, marked by a window suddenly starting to vibrate.
👻A ghostly figure in a top hat appears outside the nearby Chamberlin Hotel and is rumored to be Edgar Allan Poe, who ended his brief military career at Fort Monroe.
There are also many less well known, but equally active spirits at the fort. Floating orbs have appeared in photographs, disembodied voices and horse-hoofs have been heard, and a little girl calling for her cat named Greta has been recorded by EVPs.
👻Workers say they have seen a phantom gray cat appear and then disappear around building corners, and there have been sightings a man in mid-18th-century dress standing in front of the dining room fireplace.
👻A Lady in White regularly appears on the boardwalk in a spot now known as Ghost Alley; she is thought to be the wife of a captain who murdered her with a gun after she had an affair.

The First Landing State Park is where English colonists first landed in 1607.
▪️Native American canoes, Colonial settlers, 20th-century schooners and modern cargo ships have navigated the park's waterways.
▪️Its cypress swamps were a source of fresh water for merchant mariners, pirates and military ships during the War of 1812.
▪️Built in part by an all African-American Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-1940, the park is a National Natural Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
In the early 1700’s, the shores of the Chesapeake Bay were home to fearsome pirates.
It was a favorite lookout for one Captain Edward J. Teach, aka Blackbeard.
▪️As the legend goes, after the sacking of a bountiful merchant ship, a Navy ship was spotted coming from the west, before the Teach and his men had time to enjoy their prize. After burying their treasure in the dunes of the beach, the men fled through the narrow inland waterways of the park, back out to the ocean, before sailing to their hideout in North Carolina, intending to return to reclaim his gold when they were clear of the warships.
▪️It was never to be, however, as the Navy caught up with Teach off of the Carolina coast, in the Outer Banks. A bloody battle ensued and ended when the pirate captain was beheaded at the hands of Lt. Robert Maynard.
👻Though many have tried, the lost treasure of Blackbeard remains a mystery to this day. Legend has it that while his death occurred in North Carolina, his spirit has returned to protect that which he holds most dear.

Freemason Abbey Restaurant and Tavern, built in 1873 as a church, which has been converted into a restaurant.
👻There have been numerous paranormal accounts particularly in the kitchen and bar area where things are being moved around, cupboards opening on their own, and items falling off shelves and doors that will either not stay closed or won’t stay open.
👻There are also those who claim to have seen a dark wandering figure and the sound of a woman weeping.
▪️And to this day, employees still end the evenings by saying “Goodnight Mr. B,” a nod to a former owner of the restaurant who apparently still takes smoke breaks in the dry goods store room long after he has passed.

Housed in a former U.S Life Saving Station built in 1903, the Virginia Beach Surf and Rescue Museum preserves our coastal city’s maritime history through exhibits on local surfing legends, super storms that have hit Virginia Beach, shipwrecks, local lifeguards and more.
👻Many of the museum’s staff report experiencing otherworldly phenomena in the old building, which is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
👻Some have heard maniacal laughing attributed to the Witch of Pungo, Grace Sherwood,
▪️disembodied spirits of shipwreck victims who were often laid in the attic until the bodies were claimed,
▪️and even phantom footsteps leading up to the guard tower.

The Wells Theatre, opened in 1913 as the crown jewel of the Wells Brothers’ Beaux Arts theaters, the historic Wells has gone from stage to cinema to stage again, with some spooky members of the cast tagging along.
▪️The death of a small girl from a balcony fall during the theater’s movie days is still being relived. Employees say they hear her laughter from time to time.
▪️The spirit of a sailor,
▪️And a crew member who fell while working on the fly system and died tangled in the stage rigging. The ghost is said to roam backstage and is often blamed for missing props or doors being locked.
▪️During rehearsals, crew and cast will often be heard shouting “Stop it, Ned!”

The Ferry Plantation dates back to 1642 when the "ferry" service was started by Adam Thoroughgood to connect plantations by the waterway.
▪️The 3rd Princess Anne Courthouse built in 1735 including stock and pillory once stood on this site.
▪️The House that is visited today replaced the Walke Manor house that was built in 1740 and was later destroyed by fire.
▪️The Ferry's dig site exposes the original brick floor. The good bricks salvaged from the ruins were used to build this 1830 dwelling.
▪️It is a 10 room, central passage plan Federal farmhouse facing the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River.
▪️Near this site was the famous trial of Virginia's only convicted witch, Grace Sherwood. Grace was tried by water in 1706.
👻11 ghosts are said to haunt the Ferry Plantation.
▪️Perhaps you’ll see Henry, an enslaved man, looking for some vengeance;
▪️or hear the cries of Sally Rebecca Walke, grieving over the death of her lover;
▪️or get a replay of the Lady in White tumbling down the stairs, breaking her neck;
▪️or come across one of the victims of an 1810 shipwreck.
👉🏼But it’s a run in with The Witch of Pungo, of course, that’s most coveted.
🧙🏼♀️A section from Alpheus J. Chewning’s Haunted Virginia Beach demonstrates why:
“In spite of her death, rumors and stories continued. One tale says that on the night she died, she had her sons set her barely living body in front of the fireplace. At the moment of her death, a strong wind blew down the chimney, filling the house with smoke and soot. When the room cleared, Grace was gone and there was a cloven hoof print in the ashes, left by the Devil coming to reclaim his own.”
