Fun History of Flight by NASA. Birds inspired us humans to want to fly, too!

Around 400 BC, the discovery of the kite by Chinese had us thinking about flying. For centuries, we tried to fly just like birds. This was often disastrous.

1485 Leonardo da Vinci’s designs of the Ornithopter are what today’s helicopter is based off.

1783, a sheep, rooster and duck were the first passengers of the hot air balloon!

1799 was the beginning of designing, creating, and testing gliders.

1894 Octave Chanute published Progress in Flying Machines, which The Wright Brothers used as a basis for much of their experiments.

1903, December 17, the “Flyer” lifted from the ground weighing about six hundred pounds.

1905, October 5, Wilbur Wright piloted the Flyer III, the first practical plane flew for 39 minutes and about 24 miles, until it ran out of gas!

Fascinating! This history paved the way for the 20th century aviation advances with transporting people, cargo, and military operations.

ETIAS is not currently in operation. But starting next year, 2024, some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including United States) will be required to have a travel authorization to enter most European countries.

Since 1969, the icon Boeing 747 aircraft has served as a cargo plane, a commercial aircraft capable of carrying nearly 500 passengers, a transport for NASA’s space shuttles, and the Air Force One presidential aircraft.

ESTA (Electric System for Travel Authorization) is an automated system under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Commercial Airlines are approved to transport passengers. Private charter operators must apply to be approved to transport ESTA passengers.

Don’t underestimate the charter operations of small operators! Valkyrie Air Charters is an approved ESTA Transport operator. Sun Valley, Idaho airport (SUN) is closed for runway, taxiway, and apron rehabilitation project for approximately 30 days.

Jackson Hole, WY airport (JAC) is also undergoing airport improvement with closure now until June 28.

Aspen, CO (ASE) is also closed for required annual maintenance and repairs May 2 through May 16.

Alternate airports will be utilized during closures.

Do not underestimate the distance for a private flight! The Citation Mustang, a very light jet with cruise speed of 390 mph, makes a quick 40-minute flight comfortable and efficient from Heber, UT to Grand Junction, CO. Although the mountain drive is gorgeous, we saved our client over four and half hours of driving.

Did you know Tulsa, Oklahoma is in the center of Tornado Alley, experiencing on average 52 tornadoes per year? Building codes are stricter in Tornado Alley, including Tulsa. Despite tornadoes, Tulsa offers great weather, a first-rate park system and plenty of lakes, with more man-made lakes in Tulsa than anywhere in the country.

Phenom 100, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer by Embraer, is a great small light jet for a short flight. Comfort seating for four passengers, the Phenom 100 has max speed of 437 mph and range of 1,100 miles.

Airports are often named after influential people. Effective February 16, Las Vegas, NV (LAS)’s airport is now named Harry Reid International Airport.

Senator Harry Reid served in Nevada Senate for 30 years. Governor Steve Sisolak states, “Senator Harry Reid has never forgotten who he is or where he came from. He has spent his life and his career lifting up Nevada to what it has become today. He has helped to shape Las Vegas into a world class tourism destination, in a state that celebrates its diversity. “

Since 2017, the Las Vegas airport has been in the process for a name change, as U.S. Sen. Patrick McCarran has been criticized for having racist views and overt actions.

The ultra-long range, Gulfstream V is extremely reliable and high performing. It has a maximum range of 7,380 miles with a maximum speed of 585 mph. Making a flight from Greece to the Nevada needing only one fuel stop with flight time at about 15 hours.
