Client Partnership: True North Treks

When cancer strikes, it hits like a bolt of lightning, leaving a person and their family feeling in the dark and disconnected from the life they once knew.

True North Treks is an incredible organization whose mission is to empower young adults affected by cancer and their caregivers by helping them find direction through connection.

One of this non-profit's primary ways of helping them find direction is by taking groups of on free backpacking or canoeing treks in beautiful wilderness destinations.

Destinations where they are able to engage in three crucial connections missing from conventional cancer care:

🏕 Connection with nature after going through something as unnatural as cancer treatment

🗣 Connection with peers who have walked a similar path and understand their journey.

🧘 Connection with themselves individually through mindful awareness practices, such as meditation and yoga

True North Treks offer immersive wilderness excursions, retreat-style experiences, training in mindfulness meditation and yoga (both in the field and online), and ongoing health promotion support to their alumni.

In 2011, after years of working together for premier outdoor adventure and wilderness therapy programs, John Winton, Todd McKibben, and Lars Hall came together to create Breakwater Expeditions. Amongst the three of them, they had over 5,000 days of guiding, developing and executing programming, and teaching in the outdoors.
