White slaveholders reserve the right to name black adults as well as black babie. Naming for white authority and power. Contrary to popular history, there is no evidence that newly freed black slaves chose to adapt the surnames of their former masters, some of whom have a name like Pinckney, Randolph and Rutledge. In slavery, the names given to blacks most of the reflected their plantation job, status of geographical location.

Other slave owners gave black names that reflected and mocked the slave’s powerlessness and low status. Names such as Colonel, General, Senator Cesar, Hercules Captain, Sheriff, Socrates, Napoleon or Pompey were intended to be humerous and ridiculous.

Auction house slave rolls were filled with insulting names like Sunshine special, Sugar bear, Pomp N’ circumstances, Sweet liberty, Dick Freedom and Jump Free. When blacks were finally in a position to exercise some control over their lives, they use various methods to chose their name. For surname, most shows innocuous, but common names, like Johnson, Jones, Smith or Robinson. Others chose colors, such as Brown, Green and White as last name. Only a few chose the color “BLACK” as a last name.

A common practice was to use the name of the job they perform on the plantation, such as Tailor (Taylor), Carpenter, Wheeler (Wheel maker), Cooks, Woods or Farmers. Equally as popular were names from the Bible and popular figures of the day such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson or John Brown. When black parents were able to pick their own names for their children, it was a real milestones.

Who gets the credit for originating the passive nonviolent philosophy? During the Black Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr attributed his passive nonviolent philosophy to Gandhi of India. Ironically, Gandhi borrowed the philosophy from his readings about Frederick Douglass, a black man who believe that nonviolent political action was the best means to end slavery.

The premise of the non-violent resistant philosophy is that a person or group should be willing to sacrifice yourself for a greater good. Frederick Douglass linked his passive resistance beliefs to the philosophy of William Lloyd Garrison, a white abolitionist, who believed that moral persuasion was the best way to end slavery.

King, Gandhi, and Douglas aside, the oldest and true origin of non-violent resistance was Jesus Christ. In the New Testament of the Holy Bible, Jesus was “the lamb“ who subordinated his godly powers and allowed himself to be brutalize and sacrifice to save the world. Now you know the real history and the origins of nonviolent passive philosophy of the black civil rights movement of the 1960s.
