As you travel down the Rhine River, you'll notice two castles whose names draw a smile from observant visitors—who immediately ask how the "Cat and Mouse" castles got their amusing names.

During the Middle Ages, the Rhine was a major thoroughfare. Enterprising landowners took advantage of this, installing drawbridges and collecting tolls from all who passed through "their" section of the river. In 1356, the Archbishop of Trier built a castle, which he named Deuenberg, and began collecting tolls for his personal treasury.

It didn't take long for the Archbishop's political enemies, the powerful Katzenelnbogen family, to build a castle just up the river from, and significantly larger than, the Archbishop’s Deuenburg. This allowed the Katzenelnbogens to extract tolls from passing ships before the Archbishop could have the opportunity, thus adding to their own coffers while detracting from the Archbishop's. Thrilled with their coup, the Katzenelnbogens began referring to their own home as Castle Katz and to that of the Archbishop as Castle Maus. The names were well received by locals who knew about the rivalry between the two households. The names stuck proclaiming the Katzenelnbogen family's victory over the Archbishop in their political game of "cat and mouse”.

The ampelman Pedestrian crossings lights in Berlin were created in 1961 by a traffic psychologist. After the fall of the Berlin wall, the east Germans kept the signal and their images have become popular souvenirs. I have a pair on my desk that make me smile.
