When visiting Bhutan, we often encourage our Sodha Travelers to experience a tshechu - a vibrant festival deeply rooted in the country’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

A tshechu is a religious festival held annually in monasteries and dzongs (fortresses) across Bhutan. Dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, the 8th-century Buddhist master who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, these festivals celebrate his life and teachings through ritual dances, music, and storytelling.

For Bhutanese people, a tshechu is a time for spiritual renewal, social gathering, and celebration. It’s believed that attending these festivals cleanses negative karma and brings blessings. For visitors, it’s a unique opportunity to witness the country’s living traditions and connect with the vibrant heart of Bhutanese culture.

Expect masked dances, intricate costumes, traditional music, and an atmosphere of devotion and festivity. Locals gather in their finest attire, making it a feast for the senses and a window into Bhutanese life.

Attending a tshechu isn’t just observing a tradition—it’s participating in the timeless spirit of Bhutan. 🇧🇹

Our small group was viewing temples in Bangkok when we came across a private ceremony. The oldest son was becoming a monk.

In Thailand, it is a revered tradition for men to spend time as Buddhist monks, even briefly, as part of a rite of passage into adulthood. When the oldest son joins a monastery, it holds particular significance, as it is believed he can bring great merit to his family. This act of devotion is deeply tied to gratitude and familial duty.

The process often begins with the son wearing white robes, symbolizing purity and readiness to renounce worldly attachments.

The family graciously invited all of us to join the ceremony, believing our presence was a sign of good luck.

Our team is currently exploring the Philippines! 🇵🇭

So far, we’ve visited the eclectic capital of Manila, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and charming neighborhoods of Cebu City.

The beaches are pristine, the people are remarkably kind and gracious, and it’s lovely to see the initiatives in place to support regenerative tourism.

Also, Ube all day! 🌟

More to come…

We adore our service providers. Drivers, guides, support staff, and everyone on our team who goes above and beyond to treat our guests like family.

This is Rafik, our driver for the past five days in Goa. He graciously played the kids favorite music, made unscheduled stops for local snacks, and greeted us every single day with a smile.

It’s not just where you travel. It’s how you travel. And with drivers like Rafik, our Sodha Travelers make thoughtful connections to the heart of the destinations - the people.

Hello, Sodha Travelers! 👋

In just a couple weeks, I’m headed back to India - this time with my family! Our itinerary includes a tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park, playing with elephants in Jaipur, celebrating Navratri in Gujarat, and learning about the medicinal benefits of spices in Goa.

As the daughter of an airline pilot, I was bitten by the travel bug very early in life. The experiences outside the classroom were far more than a “vacation.” They were instrumental in shaping both my world view and my own belief system. This gift of travel also planted the seeds for my eventual career in the industry.

Traveling abroad with children offers a wealth of developmental benefits that can profoundly shape their global mindset. It nurtures their curiosity, laying the foundation for them to become more confident, open-minded, and adaptable individuals.

By immersing in different cultures, languages, and traditions, travel fosters a deeper sense of empathy and cultural awareness. This is why we launched a family travel department at Sodha Travel - to share our resources and recommendations for junior travelers. We understand the unique challenges and variables when visiting South Asia. Our team crafts and customizes every program from personal experience - not a guide book.

Starting October 2nd, follow along as I share my family highlights!

Enjoy the journey,

Allison Sodha

“India is not for beginners.”

This statement has been trending recently, so let’s talk about it.

Respectfully, we disagree.

India is for everyone - even beginners. Yes, India can be challenging to navigate, even for the most well-traveled. But beyond the number of stamps in your passport, what truly matters is being open to the experience and embracing the unexpected.

India is not a destination; it’s a journey that will transform your life in ways you never imagined. The more you lean into India’s uniqueness, the more it reveals its treasures to you.

If you know, you know.

Welcome to India. 🇮🇳

Fun facts about Vietnam. 🇻🇳

☕️ Coffee Culture: Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer, and it’s home to some unique coffee styles. Try a rich, creamy cà phê trứng (egg coffee) in Hanoi, or sip on a cool cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk) in Ho Chi Minh City.

🧵 Tailor-Made Fashion: Hoi An is a tailor’s paradise, where you can have bespoke clothing made within 24 hours. From tailored suits to silk dresses, the town’s skilled artisans can craft a wardrobe that’s uniquely yours.

🍲 Street Food Paradise: Vietnam’s street food scene is legendary. Dishes like bánh mì, phở, and bún chả are not just quick bites but culinary experiences. Michelin-starred chefs have taken inspiration from the rich flavors found in Vietnam’s bustling street markets.

🛵 Motorbike Capital: Vietnam has one of the highest numbers of motorbikes per capita in the world. In cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, navigating through the sea of bikes is an adventure in itself—best experienced with a local guide who knows the flow of traffic.

A Boutique Travel Company Specializing in Private, Immersive, and Luxury Experiences in South Asia

In my youth, I was fortunate to travel the world. My father was an airline pilot and I often heard "the world is just a plane ride away." Although I never visited India, I always had an affinity for the region and cultural philosophy.

I nurtured this curiosity by receiving my degree in Religious Studies/Religions of India from the University of Colorado. Post-graduation, I continued my independent research on India’s socioeconomic development as it relates to religious practices and then contributed my work to Little India, the largest circulated Indian publication in the United States.

After years of researching the country’s spiritual lifeline, I made my first trip to India. My life was forever changed, in ways I could never anticipate.

But it started off less than smoothly: after landing in Delhi, I learned that the airline lost my luggage. And when I arrived at the hotel, I discovered that my room was not available.
