Did you know that older phalaenopsis orchids can sometimes bloom again from a previous flower spike?? Once the flowers have died off, the spike should be cut between the scar left by the first flower and the last node (swollen, jointed area on the stem). One of the lower nodes will initiate a new spike which will bloom in 8 to 12 weeks. Have any of your moth orchids rebloomed? Let us know in the comments!

Have you heard of orchids living in cork bark tubes?? 🤯 Cattleyas, oncidiums, laelias, and other orchids thrive when potted directly in a 6-8 inch tall section of cork bark. Just drill holes around the top and insert a wire hanger and you have an all-natural hanging basket for your orchid!

Has it been a while since your cattleya has bloomed? These beautiful orchids require quite a lot of light to produce flowers. If the leaves of your plant are dark green, they aren't receiving enough light to bloom. During the winter months, cattleyas should live in a west- or south-facing window to ensure maximum light for flowers. Show us your cattleyas in the comments!

Mealybugs are one of the most common pests that can afflict orchids. These tiny critters can do considerable damage to a plant and must be dealt with swiftly. Use a cotton swab to dab 70% isopropyl alcohol on the plant where signs are visible, but repotting may be necessary as mealybugs love to nibble on roots. 🌸 TIP OF THE MONTH 🌸

Orchids grow slowly during the winter months, so it's a good idea to cut back on fertilizing. You should only need to feed your orchids twice a month at half strength. We recommend either Jack's Classic Orchid Special water-soluble fertilizer or Dyna-Gro Orchid-Pro liquid fertilizer.
