This state holiday recognizes the Russian transfer of Alaska to the United States, which took place here in Sitka. Visit Alaska Day Festival for information on celebratory activities.

October 18th is also Reconciliation Day, a day of mourning as Lingít Aani was transferred from one colonial power to the next without the consent of the Tlingit people.

Do you know the interesting history of the Alaska State Flag? Benny Benson, a 13-year-old native Alaskan orphan of Aleut-Russian descent, crafted the Alaska state flag's design in 1927. His inspiration drew from the celestial beauty of Alaska's night sky, specifically the Big Dipper constellation and the guiding light of the North Star. This emblematic design won a contest for the Alaska Territory's flag, earning Benny Benson a prize of $1,000 and a watch. Later, in 1959, upon Alaska's admission as the 49th state of the United States, Benson's creation became the official state flag, embodying the state's identity and its place as the northernmost frontier of the nation!
