My client just returned from Antigua and provided an honest review of the resort, restaurants, and island. They also suggested a couple of places to visit.

St. James's Club & Villas

The large resort (100 acres) is about a half hour drive from the airport. It is laid out on a peninsula with several hotel buildings (on the Atlantic) and a village of villas (on Mamora Bay) on a hill. We stayed in a two bedroom villa. They are spacious and laid out well. We played games with another family most nights on our dining room table or theirs. The view was spectacular. We traveled in August and the resort was not very full. The villa area was mostly quiet. We didn't have to wear bracelets.

The only drawback of the villas is that they are a bit of a distance from the main resort. However, we called the front desk for a golf cart shuttle and they always rolled up within ten minutes. The villas face Mamora Bay, where a large beach and the resort watersports were located. We took a sailboat out one morning. In the bay you benefit from having the ocean breeze but calm waters. The water on the bay was almost more like a lake.

The standard hotel-like buildings face the Atlantic. That beach has sargassum in the warm summer waters. The crew works diligently to remove. Some days are worse that others. They seem to be renovating many of these rooms.

FOOD

RAINBOW GARDEN
Located right by the pool deck. The morning buffet was good, but the only change was the smoothie of the day. They don't have lunch, but they have themed dinners. There isn't an extra cost, but you have to reserve a table.

MAMORA BAY CAFE
This is the world's greatest coffee shop. Seriously, in all our travels I've never had better at a resort. They have a selection of pastries, plus coffees- even some boozy coffee. It's open 24 hours. There is a deck outside that trees wind through. We were here every day, multiple times.

ELEVEN-11
Named for the times they are open, 11a to 11p. Food was good but limited. They also have a full bar. Sits on a hill overlooking the Atlantic and a pool, with the beach off to the side.

DOCKSIDER
We went to the British themed dinner and it was good. They also had live music. It is located right next to the beach grill. Impossible to tire of this view.

BEACH BAR AND GRILL
Limited menu, but good food, open every day for lunch. Nothing like a cheeseburger in paradise to get you out of the hot Caribbean sun.

COCO'S
Caribbean cuisine. Our group isn't very adventurous, so our least favorite. The food wasn't bad, though.

PICCOLO MONDO
This costs $40 per person, but we went here to celebrate a birthday. The food was fantastic- definitely a notch up. Gentlemen must wear pants, and the atmosphere is that of a fine restaurant.

ACTIVITIES
Hobi cats for sailing, kayaks, ping pong, pickleball, tennis. Various activities around the pool and at night (Name that tune, trivia, karaoke, magician, etc). The tennis courts and pickleball courts were like new. My favorite part was you didn't have to go to a desk to check out equipment- you just went and grabbed it on the honor system. It was simple and worked great.

There are several pools on the property. From a party atmosphere to serenity they provided both well.

GETTING OUT

There is a taxi stand/car rental on the property. We rented a taxi twice. Our driver was great. Ask for Lectric.

NELSON'S DOCKYARD
Only a 15 minute drive from the resort. Former British Navy yard in English Harbour. They have a museum, shops and even a hotel. Fun walk through history. We had less than an hour until they closed, recommend at least 90 minutes. Entry includes entry into Shirley Heights.

SHIRLEY HEIGHTS
This was one of our favorite vacation activities of all time. On the way, Lectric took us to an old lookout across the ocean. On a clear day they say you can see Monserrat. It was breathtaking. Five more minutes in the car brought us to Shirley Heights. They have live music and a BBQ on Sundays and Thursdays. Sundays are packed,

Thursdays are busy but not overly so. We easily found a table for our group of 8. We started the evening with a steel drum band as the sun slowly set across the island. After the sun set, a reggae band took the stage. Food and drinks were reasonably priced. The chicken and jerk chicken were out of this world. (Just behind the bush in the photo below is Nelson's Dockyard.)

ST. JOHN'S
Our last day on island was spent in the capital of St. John's. It is a large city of 20,000 people. We stayed around shops and restaurants near the cruise port for a few hours.

TO SUM IT UP
Antigua is a great island with low crime and it is strikingly beautiful.
The airport offers a fast track immigration for $55 each and it may be the best thing we've ever splurged on during a vacation.
The island is a bit pricier than some other destinations, but we're glad we went.

We chose St James because of the villas option. It was a little more space than we needed, but it was great. The resort food was good, and I would call the hotel portion 3 star, but the villas 4 star, maybe 4.5. Our group included kids from 12 - 23 and they all enjoyed the place. From the activities, coffee shop, etc. it truly fit us all well. There are more beautiful beaches on the Caribbean side of the island, but I think our teens/young adults may have gotten bored there.
