My Magical Life
Disney always held a special place in my heart. I remember watching all the movies at a young age, crying over Bambi, wishing I was Cinderella, hiding behind a chair when Ursula popped up on screen.
I didn’t step into Walt Disney World until I was fifteen years old. I was a freshman in high school and we went during spring break. It was a big family trip: my parents and brothers, uncle, cousin and grandparents. We didn’t know what we were doing; we just want to get as much done as we could. We weren’t sure when we would be back. I fell in love with it immediately. I remember walking around Disney’s Animal Kingdom with my parents and brothers and seeing a group of college students in costume being shown around by a leader. I didn’t exactly know what was going on but I knew I wanted to do that one day. All I talked about after that trip was how I was going to work at Disney. I wanted to be in those costumes.
I went two more times before I went to college and once after. My obsession for wanting to be a cast member grew each time I went. In college, I discovered the Disney College Program and knew I wanted to apply but because I was major in two fields, that prevented me from taking a semester off. On my last semester of college, I applied and got accepted. I remember not thinking it was real and the excitement didn’t really set in for a while. I still had to pass my exit exams, my regular exams, and classes. I didn’t have time to think of that.
December 2015, I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Biology. January 2016, I packed most of life up and drove to Orlando. I moved in with five strangers and shared a bedroom for the first time in my life. It was a shock but it changed me. For seven months, I had the opportunity to work at the All Star Resorts gift shop and Typhoon Lagoon. In those months, I explored the parks like no other. I learned tricks parks, short cuts, knew which rides were worth waiting in line, and learned how to enjoy the parks in a more relaxing way. Not only that, I made some of the best friends from all over. Disney made me more open and social in a way I struggled with before.
