NEWBERRY - Indigenous: Chicago Has Always Been a Native Place

Although Chicago has long been a historic crossroads for Indigenous people, most Chicagoans are unaware of the city’s history as a home to diverse Indigenous communities. Developed in partnership with advisors from the Chicago Native community and representatives from tribal nations with historic connections to Chicago, our latest exhibition reflects the dynamic and complex aspects of Native life in Chicago from the seventeenth century to the present. Exhibition on-view September 12, 2024 through January 4, 2025.

The CTA's newest station is now open! Green is the theme with lots of wood and windows, and not a gum stain or cigarette butt to be found anywhere! Fellow Chicagoans, we now have a green line stop in the vast gap between the West Loop and the West Side!

For those of you who demand authenticity, the CTA powers-that-be took the charming step of having a non working escalator on the day I arrived, the 14th. Why wait? Also, something really cool: Divvy's 1000th bike rental site is at the Damen station!

This stop is going to put some serious energy in motion around the United Center! Hopefully the restaurant scene picks up the way it did when the Morgan Station appeared.

Garfield Park is the oldest of Chicago's west side parks, and certainly the most attractive. Home to the Garfield Park Conservatory and a gorgeous, domed fieldhouse, this shabby gem features some lush grounds and just waiting for it's "moment". Let's hope it comes soon!

This Sunday, Quinn Chapel AME is offering a tour and overview of it's illustrious history! Quinn Chapel AME was a stop on the Underground Railroad and is home to Chicago's oldest African American congregation. With it's distinctive Gothic Revival design, it is a fantastic structure and an important piece of Chicago's architectural tapestry. Reservations required, follow the link and see you there!

SACRED is an organization working to support biodiversity in agave plants in Mexico, a very worthwhile cause. Jalisco is a gorgeous state and the home of tequila - among other Mezcals - so we are super happy to see SACRED partnering with Chicago's very own National Museum of Mexican Art!

Heads up, Chicago! If you mezcal and you love Mexico, you’re going to love the fifth (kind of) annual Copitas de Sol: A Spirited Mixer! It’s Saturday, August 5, from 2-5pm — tickets are now on sale at copitasdesol.com

The Auxiliary Board of the National Museum of Mexican Art hosts this annual fund-raiser in support of their amazing institution, and SACRED is honored to be able to help organize it. We’ll be pairing agave spirit brands with some of Chicago's best restaurants. Each team serves small bites, cocktails, and neat pours. There will also be plenty of craft brews, specialty coffee, and chocolate.
