this isn't a vague post or "kbai" post -- this is strictly a heads up to anyone who may be vetting Adventure Feet First on social platforms. I respect this + I do this myself...however, I do not have the time or capacity to keep up with social platforms. my business and personal priorities are elsewhere at this stage.

FOMO; the fear of missing out...
..like many of us I have experienced some pretty extreme FOMO. from the trips I've had to miss to the adventures I've watched play out online. even when my own adventures were pretty epic themselves I would find myself lusting after someone else's shenanigans.

I still get FOMO, I am a human with a massive to-adventure list after all.

however...my FOMO has mellowed out a lot as I have settled into the choices I've made for myself.

nowadays it's less about FOMO + more about encouraging + enabling every. single. adventure.

for myself.
for friends + family.
for internet strangers...+ most importantly, for AFF clients.

do I wish I could go on every single adventure with y'all?! um, yea, of course! they're awesome adventures!

but I've become very content with doing all the leg work for you then watching it unfold from afar.

I'm not missing out, I'm helping out!

I'm also building one helluva to-adventure list because y'all have amazing ideas that take you to incredible places!

there are a whole heap of things you can do outside...with or without kids...
..but what about those days when you just don't want to hit the trails or tow a sled uphill?!

we all need rest days, mellow days, chill days...days for bingeing a sitcom or reading a book or just sitting.

but if you have a tiny human a day on the couch isn't something you'll get without a high fever...so what do you do when you need a low key day but still need to get out of the house?!

I'm in the process of figuring this out + will have a big ol' list specific to Breckenridge soon.

but until I manage a little laptop time here is a quick list of out-of-the-house but still mellow kid-tivities...

📚 story time at the library [+ bring books home!]
☕ take coloring books to a coffee shop
🏊 go to the rec center pool to play
🥪 pack snacks and meet friends at an indoor play space so y'all can chat + the kid[s] can play

💥 what do you do to get out of the house when you need a mellow day? 💥 with or without kids...because every once in a while I get to sneak out sans toddler! 💥

it takes years to make epic things happen...
..from life changes to family expansions to business launches. everything takes time [+ a village].

sometimes I'm lucky enough to be part of that village.

about a year ago I did some gear testing / beta exploring with the All Phases Fleece. I was about six months postpartum, nursing + regularly hitting the trails with a tiny human in tow.

I was the *exact* target market for the All Phases Fleece.

[+ no lies, this fleece is one of the few reasons I'm bummed to be thru that phase of life...it was that good]

winters were the reason I moved to Colorado almost 15 years ago...
..back then my life revolved around snowboarding + I got close to triple digit days in the mountain multiple years in a row.
..then I discovered trail running + my priorities changed. I still rode in resorts a lot but my ultra training took over my weekends.
..when I realized I could combine ultra training with snowboarding when splitboarding into the backcountry I got a new set up + spent hours on Avy I + Avy II training.

my identity followed my adventurous priorities + my friend groups ebbed + flowed with the season.

⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳

nowadays my identity is much less defined.

I still partake in a wild range of extreme sports, my gear stash is overwhelming + my friend network is eclectic...but who I am + what I value doesn't change with the adventure I'm chasing.

I'll always be on the fringes of tight knit adventure groups but 98% of the time I can hold my own.

this was a fairly unintentional change in adventure mindset + while snowboarding yesterday I had time to truly appreciate this way of life + adventure.

I can still spend hours riding *+* physically function the next day! 🥳🥳

at the end of the day...adventure in a way that makes YOU happy. you will always have opportunities to spin an insta-worthy story about how you discovered yourself while out doing fun stuff!

there's nothing quite like a trip down memory lane to remind you how much you've changed...
..earlier this week marked 14[!] years since I first wore a wedding dress [different marriage, different version of me, so many lessons learned].

if you had told me back then I'd be living the life I have now I would have laughed in your face than told you to s**u.

my current life is leaps and bounds away from what I envisioned for myself 14 years ago...and even 6 years ago when this photo was taken in Iceland.

I used to do a lot of epic things...
..like get up before 5am to run many miles on trails...or throw my life into a minivan to drive out of state...like travel to foreign countries on a whim...or change my flight because I wasn't ready to leave.

I don't do those things anymore. not because they don't sound appealing, but because I'm so busy with other things [admittedly less glamorous, insta-worthy things] I don't have it in me to prioritize something just because it sounds epic...sounding cool just isn't enough anymore. 🤷‍♀️

my definition of adventure has always been on a spectrum that followed my mood and I'm very thankful for that spectrum.

every day still feels a bit like an adventure...because anyone surviving life is living a freaking adventure!

we don't have control over many situations but we can control the narrative we create for ourselves.

our power went out at 3am. it had minimal short term effects on our night but the unknowns got my mind going down all the possible worst case scenarios.
..I can't work without power...there is no heat without power...we can't make coffee without power...a shower isn't an option without power...what's for breakfast without power?..and so on!

my mind kept me awake for quite a while but when the power kicked back on at 7am I was...let down?!

why?!

because while creating every worst case scenario my brain was also making the most of the situation.
..we could go out for breakfast!..I could work from the gym with childcare!..I might even workout and shower!..we could spend time at ...the weather looked perfect for XC skiing...we could wing it and win at life!

I had no control over whether we had power or not but I did have control over the narrative I created for us. and if I'm being frank, my made up narrative was kind of amazing...maybe we'll pretend the power is out tomorrow and give this "wing it and win it" plan a go.

do you hike on muddy trails?

or, maybe, the better question is...*should* you hike on muddy trails?

or bike, or run, or waddle, or recreate in any capacity.

this is somewhat up to interpretation...

"if you leave tracks, go back"
"if there is goo, go thru"
..both are accurate.

what you really, really, really shouldn't do is go *around* the muddy bits of the trail. this widens the trail, damages the foliage, ruins the engineering of trails, hurts the ecosystem + generally "leave a trace".

🥾🥾 if you get to a trail + it is ALL mud or a river of run off it is best to go home + come back in a week or three.

🥾🥾 if you get to a trail + it's mostly dry you can carry on with your adventure but go *thru* the muddy bits. yes, you'll have muddy shoes, but that's what trail shoes are for!

🥾🥾 ultimately, use your best judgement + do your part to leave no trace!

fun fact [or AFF opinion...] >> adventures are more fun with kids in tow!

yea, the adventures are slower and require more gear but there is a whole new level of awesome added when you get to watch kids discover the world!

although there's never a dull moment hanging out in the high country, these muddy months can be rough on some of us that live up here. the trails are tough to hike, between the sticky mud + sinking snow we're all looking for dry trails.

as it's warming up here in Summit County we are all getting excited for the hiking season, but the ski season isn't over yet

there's so many resorts in Colorado + one of them is even open until *at least* June!

they vary greatly in closing dates, so here's a quick guide to when all of them close. a lot of them are wrapping up their season, so if you want to get some more turns in now might be the time!

there is no denying your adventures change a bit when you add a tiny human to the mix but that doesn't mean you have to stay home!

a nice sunny hike is always nice, but sometimes it's even more fun to get out in the snow! there are so many ways to play in the snow, like an adult [if you want], in Summit County.⁠

the best part is that a lot of them do not require a big investment, or one at all.⁠
⁠
hiking is one that requires no investment at all + there are plenty of trails around the county to get started on that.⁠

there are also lots of things you can rent for relatively cheap in the area as well. ⁠

here in Summit County the snow can't stop us from any of our favorite activities, so fat bikes are commonly seen. there are so many trails that can not only be hiked, but also biked!⁠

you don't need to own a fat bike to go either! there are many places in the county that have them available for rent.⁠

contrary to popular belief hiking is not just a summer activity! there is just as much hiking to be done in the winter + you should do some...now!

Summit County has over 100 trails that are also accessible in the winter. they come with the bonus of being accessible on foot, on skis + on snowshoes which just adds to the variety of adventure you can find in the Rocky Mountains!

a couple of my favorite go-to trails include Ptarmigan Trail + Lily Pad Lake Trail!

I used to spend a *lot* of timing riding in resorts.⁠

when I lived in the Denver Metro I drove up to Summit County 40+ days each winter to put my season pass to good use.⁠

it was just what I did.⁠
I swear traffic wasn't quite as bad "back then".
⁠
in the recent years I've started spending more time outside the resorts...for a multitude of reasons, but there are days when I seriously miss resort riding.⁠

you'll see a lot of hiking, cross-country skiing, running, sledding + such on the Adventure Feet First feed during the winter months.⁠
