History is being made in Galveston! If you're on the island tomorrow, join us at 28th & Seawall at 10am for a special ceremony unveiling a historical marker honoring African American lifeguards.🛟 Their legacy and contributions to our beaches will now be recognized for generations to come.

Kick-off Black History Month in Galveston with the unveiling of an undertold marker honoring African American lifeguards.
Unveiling Ceremony & Proclamation Reading:
When: Saturday, Feb. 1
Time: 10 a.m.
Where: Ceremony @ 28th & Seawall; reception to follow @ McGuire-Dent recreation center

The Texas Historical Commission has awarded Galveston Island an undertold marker to commemorate the fascinating history of heroic African American lifeguards like James “Jim” Helton, Waverly Guidry, Leroy Green, Jr. Lynn Stephens, John Ned Rose, Willie Diggs, Oliver O’Conner and more who worked the historically segregated beach from 27th to 29th street in Galveston for many decades.

This project is being spearheaded by the African American Beach Lifeguarding (AABL) committee in partnership with Galveston Island Beach Patrol, NIA Cultural Center, Old Central Cultural Center, Galveston Historical Foundation, The Galveston Park Board of Trustees, Galveston Lifeguarding Inc., Galveston’s African American Cultural Heritage District, and the City of Galveston.

The African American Beachfront holds a profound cultural and social legacy. During the era of segregation, Galveston's beaches were divided, with a designated area for African Americans. This section of the beachfront became a vibrant hub for African American communities, offering a space for leisure, social gatherings, and cultural expression amidst the challenges of racial discrimination. Generations of African Americans in Galveston and beyond found solace, joy, and solidarity on these sands, fostering a sense of identity and resilience.
