Blast from the past! Sea-Arama Marineworld was one of the first ocean theme parks in the US. It opened in 1965, and you could see dolphins, whales, a man wrestling an alligator, and ski shows. 🌊🐬

There's still time to see Washed Ashore! 🦈 🏝️ 🦅

The Washed Ashore Project is an awe-inspiring sculptures constructed entirely of plastic debris that has washed up on America's beaches and is designed to demonstrate the scale of plastic pollution found in our oceans and waterways.

Artists have intentionally placed familiar items like buckets and shovels at children’s eye level to convey the importance of keeping beaches clean. Each sculpture graphically illustrates the tragedy of plastic in our oceans and waterways and aims to encourage conservation.

“The Galveston News’ brick building, in process of construction at this writing (Nov. 1, 1883), is one of the most modern and finest structures in the city, and would be considered a fine building in Chicago or St. Louis.” ~Galveston City Directory, 1884/85

It’s and we are downtown on Mechanic Street featuring one of our island’s most impactful StormSurvivors! Why, you ask?

This elaborate brick building, designed by architect Nicholas Clayton, was home to the Galveston Daily News from 1884 - 1965. The majority of the historic newspaper articles we share were typed and printed inside these walls. The history of Galveston was quite literally written in this building!

Enjoy the historic maps, articles, and photographs (pay special attention to photo number 5 to hear about an early “dispute” in the alley of the building).
