“Few firms offer the genuine artistry and the practicable angles of the building trade so completely as does the Island City Woodworking Company, at 18th and Mechanic Streets, in Galveston.” ~Galveston Daily News, 1932

Like many of our island structures, this historic building has served multiple purposes and experienced many rebirths through the years. In ~1909, the building and its inhabitants embarked on their first and longest journey as the Island City Woodworking Company. Built by pioneer Galveston building contractor, Mills Cornelius Bowden, the building successfully helped deliver millwork, window and doorframes, and all things lumber to the island city for many years.

Fortunately for preservation’s sake, all subsequent owners have maintained at least some of the historic milling equipment and records intact - even through the barbecue years when the Webers opened Millworks Barbecue in the old shop.

Recently, this feature has discovered its next purpose as a unique and timeless event venue, hosted by none other than Galveston’s own, Save 1900. Now known as The Artisan Galveston, the space pays homage to all those who have come before and those who celebrate here today. If you look closely at the historic newspaper articles, you will notice that the Cordray Drug Store ice cream and The Island City Woodworking Company have been connected since at least 1920…!

Have a great Saturday y’all!!

Celebrate , by seeing the inspiring Washed Ashore Sculptures! 🐠♻️🐢

Did you know plastics are the most common form of marine debris, and each year, millions of tons of plastics enter the ocean?

Unfortunately, people are the sole cause of plastic debris in the ocean. It’s a problem, but it’s one WE can do something about. Remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle, we can all make a difference!

These sculptures are a powerful reminder of the importance of recycling. Learn more at
