Dubai reopened to international visitors in July 2020, with Abu Dhabi following suit in December. Although the United States isn’t yet on the UAE’s list of approved “green” low-risk countries, Americans can enter the country with stipulations.
As of May 17, 2021, Dubai has also lifted its limited-capacity rules for hotels, meaning they can be booked to 100%. Public gatherings, such as concerts and sporting events, can also take place at up to 70% capacity for vaccinated people. Mask-wearing and social distancing are still required.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning a visit Abu Dhabi or Dubai this summer.
In addition to negative PCR test results that must be shown at the airport, new rules, which went into effect on May 3, require all U.S. citizens, ages 2 and older, to quarantine for 10 days upon entering via Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). They must then submit to mandatory PCR testing on days six and 12.

Who should register for STEP?
The primary purpose of STEP is to keep American citizens safe. While you probably don’t need to register if you’re taking a weekend trip to Canada, here are a few reasons to consider signing up:

You’re traveling to an area that’s politically unstable or prone to violence.
You’re taking an extended trip (several weeks or months-long) where you may have limited internet access.
You’re traveling for a major event, summit or conference (like the World Cup) that might become the target of protests or attacks.
You’re a minority traveling to an area where you might be targeted as an outsider.
You’d like an additional safety resource during your trip, no matter the destination.

Other vaccine passport developments

Air New Zealand announced it will be trialing a digital Travel Pass initiative on its route from Auckland (AKL) to Sydney (SYD). The Travel Pass is designed by IATA and can is to be used by passengers and crew who have been vaccinated. It is hoped that it will streamline the health verification of travelers and make journeys contactless as well as speed the airport process up.

The Prime Minister of the U.K., Boris Johnson, has also unveiled the roadmap that will hopefully lead to the complete lifting of strict lockdown restrictions by June 21. Among the ideas? A vaccine passport for pubs and theaters.

Additionally, digital health passports are a hot topic of discussion as they are likely to be crucial to the reboot of international travel. There are currently several in development, including a version by IATA called the Travel Pass. Once immunized, ‘digital health passports’ will be a means to storing the relevant information related to your vaccination in one place, which you will then be able to show at the required checkpoints throughout your journey.

Finally, it’s not just countries that are requiring vaccines for entry. Some cruise lines also now require that passengers have been immunized against COVID-19 in order to cruise.

Poland

As of Dec. 28, 2021, Poland introduced a mandatory 10-day self-isolation for all arrivals into the country. However, if you can prove with a certificate that you’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19, you will be exempt from the quarantine period.

If you haven’t been vaccinated, you can still travel to Poland and be exempt from self-isolation so long as you can show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of arrival at the border.

According to the U.S. embassy, Americans are still not allowed in Poland.

Lithuania

The Baltic nation of Lithuania has reduced its restrictions on vaccinated travelers.

The relaxed restrictions apply to those arriving in Lithuania with proof that they have completed the full course of one of the coronavirus vaccines. This will mean being exempt from partaking in testing on arrival as well as self-isolation on arrival into the country.

All travelers must fill out this form before traveling to Lithuania.

As it stands, U.S. citizens are currently not allowed to enter Lithuania, according to the U.S. Embassy.

Lebanon
As of Jan. 11, 2021, arrivals into Lebanon who can prove they’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine will be exempt from having to quarantine. As a precautionary measure, arrivals will still be expected to take a COVID-19 PCR test ($50, paid to the airline).

You will still need to take a PCR test at least 96 hours before you travel to Lebanon. If you cannot prove this at check-in at your departure airport, you will not be allowed to travel.

Jamaica

Jamaica officially reopened for tourism ,but anyone hoping to plan a vacation there, especially those from a high-risk country (such as the U.S.) needs to submit a pre-travel health authorization registration with a customs and immigration form, and the government will issue a travel approval document based on those details.
Travelers may be denied permission to visit depending on their risk for COVID-19 transmission.

All travelers age 12 and older must bring along negative results of a COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test taken within 3 days.

All incoming travelers should expect thermal temperature checks upon arrival, and anyone who shows COVID-19 symptoms or feels ill upon arrival will be quarantined.
Even after all those procedures, travelers are expected to remain throughout their stay at accommodations within the “resilient corridors,” where hotels and resorts have been certified to accept tourists and adhere to social distancing and face mask policies in public.
Travelers may leave their resort only to visit certified tourist attractions and are expected to follow any policies made by tourist and hospitality establishments.

Cuba again welcomed international visitors back in July. The U.S. State Department has a “Do not travel” advisory in place for Cuba.

Politics limits Americans travel to Cuba more than COVID-19. Long-standing travel restrictions were recently tightened by the U.S. government, eliminating many of the reasons Americans were allowed to visit Cuba in recent years.

Mexico began a slow regional opening on June 29, and many coronavirus restrictions have been lifted.

Mexico is one of the few countries that flung open its doors to Americans. At first, it was just beach destinations like Cancun, but now even Mexico City is welcoming back Americans.
There are, however, capacity restrictions in many public spaces as Mexico City had been under a partial lockdown issued right before the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

All Mexican airports are open to Americans. Tourists are advised that enhanced screening and cleaning procedures are in effect. There are also health checks at all airports, but no testing requirements.
However, as of Jan. 26, everyone aged two and older traveling to the U.S. from Mexico is required to show a negative viral COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure before being allowed to board their flights; documented proof from a licensed healthcare provider of recovery from the virus within the past 90 days will also be accepted.

Many Mexico resorts have begun to offer on-property rapid Antigen and PCR tests for guests returning to the U.S.

Mexico saw a major surge in cases in late December and early January following an influx of tourists. The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory for Mexico is Level 3: Reconsider Travel. and the CDC’s advisory is Level 4: Do Not Travel. For details check here.

Starting with our beloved United States
The United States remains the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. Important for travelers to the U.S. to know: As of Jan. 26, (CDC) requires all air passengers two years of age and older traveling to the U.S. from abroad to take a viral COVID-19 test within three days of departure for the U.S. and provide documentation of a negative PCR or Antigen result to their airline before being allowed to board.
Documented proof from a licensed healthcare provider of recovery from the virus within the past 90 days will also be accepted. This will apply to both non-citizens as well as U.S. citizens returning to the U.S. from any international destination (with the exception of U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Biden also signed an executive order soon after taking office in late January that mandates the wearing of masks on federal property and domestic public transportation, including planes and airports.
The order will also require all passengers arriving in or returning to the U.S. to quarantine upon arrival, but details and timing on the quarantine requirements have yet to be announced.
All states had been in various stages of their own reopening processes, but a surge in cases this fall has forced many to resume closure of some public spaces, ban indoor dining at restaurants and bars, limit gatherings, mandate mask-wearing and require quarantines or proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test for incoming travelers.

When will I be traveling for business again? And what about my frequent-flier miles?
This was the year business travel flatlined, taking with it airline, hotel and convention hall profitability. For a time, it also jeopardized those loyalty-point balances coveted as freebie currency by frequent business travelers and many others, as miles and credit-card points seemed less valuable when no one was traveling.

But points programs are far from dead, experts say, citing better booking terms, the growing value of loyal customers to travel companies and the advent of creative programs that may allow you to spend points like cash more easily on things other than airline tickets or magazine subscriptions. In these largely stationary times, programs are keen to retain existing members.

“Most airlines have increased the value of their points by getting rid of fees,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of The Points Guy, a travel site devoted to rewards. He noted also that fees to change itineraries or refund miles on canceled trips have been dropped. “It makes it more valuable to redeem using miles because they’re fully refundable, whereas cash tickets are changeable.”

The bank of points — still somewhat growing thanks to travel-rewards credit cards that expanded to offer bonuses on things like groceries during the pandemic — and increasing opportunities to travel with the widespread distribution of vaccines suggest competition to redeem for seats is coming, leading to an eventual devaluation of points. But not soon, say experts, in part because many airlines used their loyalty programs as collateral when they borrowed money during the pandemic.

What new travel trends can I expect to continue in 2021?

Call them “workcations,” “flexcations,” bleisure, whatever: By any name, the longer trips that remote working facilitated in 2020 show no signs of slowing.

“Global nomadism is going to be a huge theme in 2021,” Jack Ezon, the founder of Embark Beyond, a luxury travel agency. “People are going to a destination for a month because they can work and play at the same time.”

Stays of seven or more nights currently account for 17.5 percent of the January bookings at The Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, which reopened in mid-December for the first time since March. Last January, stays of that length totaled 8.3 percent.

Jonathan Plutzik, The Betsy’s owner, said interest in new extended-stay packages cut across the generational spectrum.

“Families with young children are looking for space: outdoor spaces to be with their kids and space to work remotely,” Mr. Plutzik said. “Fifty- and 60-somethings are looking for those things, plus a full-service staff and places to dine and relax outside.”

Until vaccinations are widespread, other patterns will also persist. Ever-changing state and county travel restrictions and international travel will continue to make staycations and local travel among the few options for those looking to get away.

That tracks with what most consumers say they feel ready to do next year. In an October survey from Airbnb, 61 percent of respondents said they’re interested in trips within driving distance of home. Top 2021 destinations on Airbnb include Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains and Palm Springs, Calif.

“Twenty-twenty was definitely the year the world went local,” said Mr. Ezon. “People were forced to explore their own backyards, which was incredibly rewarding. But by May or June, with more vaccines, borders will probably start to open.”— S.F.

Will I ever feel safe traveling?
Among the many things the pandemic revealed about the travel industry is that almost every sector — from airlines and cruises to travel agencies and hotels — was ill-prepared to handle a crisis of this magnitude, as were governments. The crush to keep customers happy (or at least loyal), provide refunds where possible and even bring citizens home at the start of the pandemic, showed that no matter how many contingency plans were in place, there are some things no one can prepare for.

In the months since the pandemic took hold, people across the industry have been working to create policies and procedures that can apply in times of future crisis — even if that future crisis isn’t a health crisis. Many companies will use these changes, particularly in health and safety measures, to woo travelers back in 2021.

For hotels and home-sharing, perhaps the most visible change is the emphasis on cleanliness. People have learned to deeply care about the hygiene of heavily trafficked spaces, like hotels, planes and trains, and will demand a stepped-up focus on health measures.

This approach is largely meant to put travelers at ease. Designations and ranking systems that take cleanliness and safety into account could become the norm in the hospitality industry.

Partnerships with trusted cleaning-supply brands or hospitals will continue to evolve and be marketed to would-be travelers. Amtrak touts its relationship with RB, the makers of Lysol, while a partnership between Pendry Hotels and the health service One Medical gives hotel guests access to One Medical’s app even after they’ve checked out.
Beyond cleanliness and health measures, travelers’ fears could be assuaged by clearer communication, flexible cancellation and rescheduling policies, and better use of technology during every aspect of the travel experience.
