Your week before travel checklist: Family edition

Save this for later! 📌

✅ Make special requests ahead of time for adjoining rooms, cots, cribs, etc.

✅ Request early check-in so you don’t have to wait around if you’re landing before the standard 3PM check-in.

✅ Pack a secret stash of surprise goodies for the littles to special moments and good behavior.

✅ Audit your bags to make sure you’re not missing any of the little things like the kids’ toothpaste or their favorite hat.

I literally breathe a sigh of relief every time a client makes it to the airport, boards their flight, and is officially on the way.

But what happens if you do miss your flight?

1. First, if you’re headed to the airport and you’re pretty sure you won’t make your flight, contact the airline en route to let them know. They may even be able to start making arrangements for a new flight.

2. When you arrive, make a beeline for the airline’s customer service desk — they’re your best allies for getting booked onto another flight.

3. Get in touch with your travel advisor (Hey hey, that’s me!) so I can re-arrange your airport transfers and call the hotel to let them know you’re arriving later so you don’t risk getting bumped in an overbooking situation, or getting stuck with the worst room.

When travel plans hang in the balance, it’s a must to have support and someone to help smooth things over.

How do you make the most of your travel budget? Allow me to show you the way:

✅ Don’t delay booking. Prices can fluctuate at the drop of a hat, so booking well in advance is a must.

✅ Have a plan. Have a general idea of how much you want to spend each day of your vacation so you can stay on track.

✅ Don’t fall for false advertising. Sometimes a travel deal looks just fine, but then you get to the fine print and realize it’s not as great as it seems. Keep an eye on the fine print for blackout dates and hidden fees.

✅ Work with a travel agent. I have access to offers and tons of value-added things that you won’t get when you book online through a third-party website.

How far in advance should you book a vacation?

Honestly, it depends on the season and the destination in question. But if you ask me, sooner is always better than later.

A recent survey suggested that if you book a domestic vacation up to two months in advance, you could save up to 20% on airfare.

For an international trip, booking four months earlier can help you save about 13%.

If more luxe accommodations, a private tour guide, a unique experience, a pass for the swanky airport lounge, or just a few extra margs on the beach sounds like a better way to spend that 20%, then it’s about time to get planning.

If you are considering gifting travel...

Let’s be honest: gifting someone travel is a BIG deal. If you’re considering putting a trip under the tree this year but are unsure where to start, I can help.

Here are three things to consider to ensure it goes off without a hitch.

Tip #1 - Keep it open-ended. Unless you’re positive, someone can depart on the dates you decide, keeping things flexible is better.

Tip #2 - Instead of pre-booking, gift a token representing the trip, then plan the details with the person you’re gifting. I recommend wrapping up a guidebook or a travel brochure with a card explaining what you’ll pay for. Then, you can work with a travel advisor to book the trip once you’ve worked the details out with the person you’re gifting.

Tip #3 - Make them a part of the process. If you’re considering surprising your children with a trip, consider picking the destination but allowing them to be a part of planning the itinerary. Hence, they feel a part of the process. The anticipation of traveling is part of the fun, after all!

And there you have it. With those three tips, you’re well on your way to gifting that special someone with travel this Holiday season.

Starting in January 2024, all visitors to Europe who can currently travel to Europe visa-free — including travelers from America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — will need to apply for travel authorization and receive approval prior to travel.

Thankfully, the process is easier than your standard visa! 🎉

➡️ It’s a quick online application, and approval will be sent through email, usually within an hour, but in some cases, it could take up to 96 hours.

➡️ Once approved, the authorization is valid for all countries within the EU. You can make multiple entries for a 3-year period or until your passport expires.

➡️ The application will cost €7 (7.52 USD).

➡️ The amount of time Americans and Canadians can spend in Europe is unchanged — it’s still up to 90 days without needing a special visa.

Nobody ever wants to talk about when trips go south — and by south, I don’t mean to the Caribbean to enjoy the beautiful beaches.
And even I don’t love having the conversation.
But I’d be skipping a key part of my services if I didn’t mention all of the things I do to help my clients avoid risking their vacation plans and get out of sticky situations.
