Happy Birthday (tomorrow) to our friend Monty Alexander who was born on D-Day in 1944. Yes, that makes him 80 years old, but he still is a fountain of youth, both on and off the bandstand.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies during World War II brought together land, air, and sea forces landing on the shores of Normandy and able to invade N**i held Europe. Meanwhile, in Kingston, Jamaica on June 6, 1944, Montgomery Bernard "Monty" Alexander was born. 🥰

On June 6, Monty will be celebrating his 80th birthday at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley and we will be online at some time on Thursday/

Happy Birthday, Miles Davis, the iconic trumpeter, composer and bandleader who influenced so many of the artists who perform on The Jazz Cruise.

Happy birthday, Miles Davis!

One of the most titanic presences and influences in all of jazz's history, Miles Davis literally rewrote the playbook for this music time and again, leading generations of artists into incredible new territories. Cutting his teeth in Swing Era big bands before landing a coveted spot performing with Charlie Parker, Davis would ultimately master the BeBop idiom even as he simultaneously (in collaboration with figures like Gil Evans, John Lewis, Gerry Mulligan, and more) helped coax the rise of cool jazz during the late 1940s and early 1950s. From there, Miles continued to grow and innovate: his iconic 1954 album Walkin' helped herald the arrival of the Hard Bop style, perfected through his efforts with what we now call his First Great Quintet, later 1950s works like Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain were watersheds in the burgeoning Third Stream movement in the music, while Milestones and Kind of Blue demonstrated the incredible expressive beauty in Jazz's embrace of modes. As the 1960s unveiled, Miles formed yet another iconic quintet, and with them stretched jazz into some of its most creative and extraordinary spaces through albums like Nefertiti and The Sorcerer. While many jazz artists would have rested on their well-deserved laurels, Miles did not, and his late 1960s Fusion efforts In a Silent Way and Bi***es Brew proved profoundly influential, exploring rock instrumentation while also innovating in abstract textures and free improvisation. 1970s fusion works found Miles embracing intense dance grooves, with now-classic efforts like On the Corner or Agharta. While the late 1970s saw him step away from music, his return in the 1980s with iconic and award-winning albums like Tutu and Star People saw him embracing some of the latest sounds and developments in popular music of the day. Leaving behind an unmatched record of experimentation and innovation, Miles also left us in the hands of generation upon generation of artists who grew up under his mentorship and influence.

Our Story

For over 20 years, The Jazz Cruise has presented the very best in straight ahead jazz. With over 200 hours of music, 100 jazz musicians including legendary jazz masters, a fully renovated ship and, most importantly, a legion of loyal guests from all over the world, more than ever, The Jazz Cruise '22 will be WHERE STARS SHINE, NIGHT & DAY.

Though The Jazz Cruise is about music and more music, we are excited that we will visit, for the first time, the beautiful ports of Aruba and Curacao during our cruise. And, you will able to enjoy a new level of luxury and accommodations on our Revolutionized Celebrity Millennium Class Ship, a process during which each and every stateroom was removed and replaced with new amenities, new décor, new bedding and much more.

The Jazz Cruise begins its 3rd decade of sailing with the best lineup of musicians, a ship that provides both excellent venues and accommodations and the excitement of returning to sea. The anticipation is palpable. This is one sailing that you do not want to miss!
