I recently returned from an incredible journey in Japan 🇯🇵, where I joined our eBike tour with a group of fantastic guests.

Here are the top 5 experiences that truly made our e-bike tour in Japan a memorable ride 👇

#1 - Making soba noodles in a small village in the Iya Valley, Japan, was truly special.
Our instructors, a pair of cheerful elderly ladies, taught us how to make the noodles from scratch. We even got to cook and enjoy them for lunch!

Then, the icing on the cake: one of the instructors sang for us after lunch. It turns out she was an award-winning folk singer!

#2 - Days four and five had us cycling to and along Shikoku's Pacific coast, surrounded by the vivid greens of valleys and hills, with the soundtrack of water below. Pure cycling bliss.

# 3 - In a little remote village in the hills outside Yusuhara, on the island of Shikoku, we learned how to make handmade washi paper from one of the few remaining master papermakers in the area. A learning experience and a great memento from the tour.

#4 - While all of our accommodations throughout the trip were exceptional, there was one evening's stay that was truly special.

We spent the night at an Onsen Retreat, perched high on the headland with a commanding view over the bay and Pacific Ocean. With a place like this, you will be in no hurry to leave.

#5 - The culinary journey on our tour was, without a doubt, a consistent highlight that complemented every experience we had.

Each meal presented new flavors and local specialties that ranged from fresh seafood to uniquely prepared wild boar, citrus-infused drinks, and famous Japanese sake.

Reece here! 👋 I'm back with more stories from my recent trip to Japan.

Picking just one favorite riding day is a true challenge; each day brought its own unique set of activities and experiences, crafting a deeper, more intimate connection with Japan's rich landscape and culture.

But, my team challenged me with only one so I picked day 2, where we rode the longest bridge of the enchanting Shiminami. 🇯🇵🚴‍♂️

#2 - It was a glorious day for cycling across the Seto Inland Sea; the sky was blue, the sun was out, and there were a few Sakura still in bloom. 🌸 It was a lovely spring day to be cycling in Japan!

#3 - We explored the legacy of the Murakami Pirates, who dominated the Seto Inland Sea for 200 years.

We viewed some historical sites and learned how the powerful currents that flow between the islands were used to the pirates' advantage as a natural defense.

#4 - On the second day, we completed the legendary Shiminami Kaido ride, and toasted our victory from an observation point on the island of Shikoku, overlooking the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and looking back at the string of islands we had just spent two days cycling across. A moment to savor!

#5 - That evening we enjoyed a seemingly endless stream of unique Japanese dishes, accompanied by sake tasting—Japan's most famous drink.

We're back recounting tales from the road less traveled—where every turn brings a new friend, a laugh, or a memory that sticks with us long after the bikes are parked. 🚴‍♂️

👋 Meet James, General Manager at Grasshopper Adventures, whose incredible rise from a first-time guest in 2016 to the driving force behind the scenes exemplifies his spirit of adventure.

He recounts one of his favorite moments of connection while touring Vietnam and Cambodia 🇻🇳👇

As we wrapped up the Mekong Bike & Boat Adventure, the whole crew (and I mean, everyone on the ship) came together to offer an unforgettable farewell.

Having spent almost a week in each other's company, there was a genuine sense of camaraderie among us, akin to what you would feel with old friends.

The Toum Tiou II may be a modestly sized ship, but its intimacy only amplified the special connections we formed on board, thanks in large part to the crew's efforts to make everyone feel valued and included.

Among the memorable companions on this journey was Katherine, who was one of the highlights of the tour for me. From the get-go, it felt like she had been part of my family all along. Sharing this adventure with her was truly a delight.

🇮🇩 Bali is drenched in spirituality. It's seen in the daily offerings at every doorstep, the sacred temples at each corner, and the countless ceremonies continually reminding the islanders of their rich cultural heritage.

Our group discovered this spiritual heart of Bali on perhaps its most sacred day—Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence.

It is a profound observance that marks the Balinese New Year. Esteemed for its spiritual significance, the day is dedicated to self-reflection, fasting, and meditation. The island falls quiet: streets empty, lights dim, and all pause from daily activities for introspection and honor towards nature. The silence is seen as a time for the earth to rejuvenate.

Passing by residential houses, we found ourselves amidst ceremonies unfolding right before us. Each one of us felt like a participant in a rare cultural encounter. We just stood still, watched in awe, and, for a moment, felt so connected to humanity. This was a moment when Bali revealed itself fully to us.

Three things you need to know about Thailand's Festival of Lights ✨🏮

1️⃣ The Festival of Lights, or Loi Krathong, is a time of reflection and joy, where Thais release lanterns into the sky and water to symbolize letting go of negativity and welcoming a brighter future.

2️⃣ The festival takes place on the evening of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which is usually in November.

3️⃣ While the festival is celebrated nationwide, Chiang Mai offers a unique blend of sky lantern releases and the traditional water lantern release on the Ping River.

Reece here! 👋 I recently returned from my amazing journey through Japan and wanted to share my top 5 food highlights with you! 🇯🇵

#1 - On tour we enjoyed amazing set dinners 4 out of 6 nights, featuring local, seasonal ingredients in multi-course meals. 🦞 Some were Kaiseki-style, and all were rich in seafood.

If you are on the fence about seafood when you come to Japan, I guarantee that you will leave with a newfound appreciation for the bounty of the ocean!

#2 - Wild boar. These are actually a pest on the island, destroying local crops, and trappers are encouraged to reduce their numbers. Innovative restaurants are including the locally-sourced wild boar into their menus, and it's a must-try.

#3 - Try the interesting yam known as konnyaku. While it's not actually a yam and not the most flavorful local ingredient, it is a curious plant that's notable for its unique texture. Konnyaku can be paired with sauces and other ingredients to create interesting flavor and texture combinations.

#4 - Lots of citrus-inspired dishes and drinks! Citrus is a specialty of the island and many restaurants and shops have found fantastic ways to highlight this local produce. Make sure to try a lemon sour for a refreshing post-ride drink!

#5 - Our own handmade soba noodles! We joined a Soba-making workshop and got to enjoy our own hand-made buckwheat noodles for lunch. That was very memorable and tasty!

And, yes, of course, I had plenty of sushi, ramen, and delicious oknomiyaki, which is a specialty of Hiroshima and Osaka. 🇯🇵

What a mothwatering ride it's been 🍜 Go to Japan with an inquisitive palate and you will not be disappointed!

⛰️ You can see mountains on one side and the endless ocean on the other, offering views that leave you speechless. People from all corners of the globe consider it one of the most beautiful cycling routes in all of Southeast Asia.

I had the honor to cycle it with our guests on the Vietnam Esseantials tour. As soon as our wheels took on the 10-kilometer climb, we knew this ride would test our determination.

But as we cycled, every look shared between us was a word unspoken: "wow." 💚

👋 Welcome to our collection of moments that remind us why we strap on our helmets and set off into the sunset, one pedal at a time.

Meet Reece, our adventure-loving Marketing Manager! 🚴‍♂️ From Australia to Cambodia, recounting a memorable journey through Northern Thailand.

It was a beautiful, sunny day as we rode through Northern Thailand, leading up to the spectacular festival of lights known as Loy Kratong. We were enjoying a beautiful ride through small villages and picturesque countryside. During a refreshment break, we noticed a group of ladies harvesting rice in a nearby field.

The ladies were covered head-to-toe, protecting themselves from the elements, particularly the sun. In comparison, we seemed quite underdressed. With the help of our guide and interpreter, we struck up a conversation, and before we knew it, we were invited to try our hand at harvesting.

The tall stalks, weighed down by the rice, were bundled together and cut near the base using small handheld blades. This method has likely been practiced for centuries and is a far cry from modern mechanical methods used in agriculture today. It was a fun experience to try, but after just a few bundles, you realized the immense effort required to harvest an entire field this way!

It became clear that such a task could only be accomplished with the support of family and the community. The field suddenly seemed much larger, but our appreciation for these hardy ladies grew even more.

After a few attempts, most of us happily returned the blades, grateful for the small taste of rural life. There was plenty of laughter, mostly directed at ourselves for our lackluster farming skills.

This spontaneous meeting, in a remote corner of rural Thailand, coinciding fortuitously with the harvest, was a moment I couldn't replicate if I tried, which makes me treasure it as a memory and a genuine moment of connection.
