I drove into Pittsburgh on Friday to scope out the classroom for the nature journaling class I’ll be teaching in May at Phipps Conservatory. While I was at Phipps I spent a few hours wandering around the greenhouses and sketching. What a wonderful escape! I sat at the cafe, sipping a cappuccino and enjoying a bowl of soup, while I painted and watched the rain fall outside. Here’s one of the sketches I did - it’s a Bird’s Nest Fern. The stem with the swirly top was at least three feet tall. They were monumental! It’s interesting that, with rooms full of colorful spring flowers surrounding me, I was drawn to this weird green and brown plant. Isn’t it cool though? I tried some thing different yesterday when I was painting in Korcula town. It was so much fun drawing all the whacky angles and playing around with color. Today is our last day on the island. We’ll head back to Dubrovnik tomorrow, and the next day…HOME!

Monday I’ll be flying off to Bruges, Belgium, where I’ll teach a weeklong workshop then travel to Croatia for a ten-day workshop on Korcula. Packing for a 3-1/2 week trip overseas can feel all-consuming, but I managed to squeeze in some time to do a pre-trip sketch in my journal this week. I always like to start my travel journals with a quote. This one speaks to the dichotomy between my love of travel and my love of home. On the top half of the page, I drew travel stuff, and in the lower part, some of the things I miss when I’m away. (8x8 handmade journal, gel pens, Stabilo point 88 pen, and watercolor)

I enjoy doing black and white sketches on toned paper. This one was done in a Stillman and Birn Nova sketchbook. I used a water soluble Pentel Tradio pen for the drawing and then touched the drawn shading with a wet brush to soften the edges. Highlights were added with a white Signo UniBall pen.
