Stephen uses theatre techniques to address social challenges, advocating for change and empowerment. Inspired by his grandparents' pandemic experiences, he’s passionate about offering creative outlets for older adults through storytelling, puppetry, and more.🎭✨

One of our favorite projects to take on as Activity Specialists at The Hummingbird Project is a Legacy project. This typically involves using prompts and questions to engage your client in storytelling about their own life. As Activity Specialists, we compile their stories into one of many options for a keepsake for the individual and their family to hold onto for years (or even generations) to come.

Activity: One of the more easily achievable keepsake items would be a scrapbook. Spend some time with your loved one sorting through pictures and articles they may have accumulated over their lifetime and pick some out that they feel tell the story of who they are. With your loved one arrange the pictures and article clippings in a way they feel tells their story. Once you're done you have a wonderful keepsake for everyone to enjoy and maybe you'll have even learned something new about your loved one along the way!

Our latest blog features a timely and compelling personal story about one of our clients. With the Paris 2024 Olympics underway, it seems fitting to learn about our client Carol, one of the trailblazers in synchronized swimming more than sixty years ago. As Carol grapples with memory loss today in her 80s, her deep connection to the sport has been a transformative positive catalyst for her.

Carol’s history is fascinating. Swimming dominated her early years. Carol was a lifeguard, swimmer, national synchronized swimmer, and synchronized swimming instructor. Her synchronized swimming accomplishments enabled her to represent the USA in the 1960 Rome Olympics. The world’s most prestigious athletic event debuted a synchronized swimming demonstration long before the sport qualified as an Olympic event. Carol played a crucial role in the Olympic performance. With grace, skill, and unwavering dedication, Carol and her teammates captivated audiences and officials alike, displaying the artistry and precision of synchronized swimming with every elegant movement.

Fast forward. Now 84, Carol's last graceful strokes in a pool were a distant memory – at 22!

Under the guidance of Helen, her Sage Eldercare Solutions Personal Care Attendant (PCA), Carol ventured back into the pool.

From Helen’s perspective, we share Carol’s journey down memory lane of a pool in our blog. The resulting physical and symbolic reawakening of the soul will inspire you!

At Sage, the transformative effect of Carol's return to the pool underscores why our entire company is focused on the quality of life for our clients. We help our clients reignite their interests and rediscover the joy of something once loved. Each client is different. For Carol, swimming in a pool triggered her renaissance. For others, it may be music, dance, or walking in nature that reawakens distant, positive memories. We work hard to customize the best approach for each client.

The Hummingbird Project has been honored to work with artist Roger Simpson to support his creative voice. A native of Burlingame, Roger is an accomplished artist and musician. Roger attended College of San Mateo where he studied jazz and numerous other subjects. At UC Berkeley, he studied social welfare. Later, he discovered painting through a class at a halfway house after an illness. His artistic voice blossomed.
