With a delayed start on 8/18 due to strong thunderstorms along an associated front, the Ida Lewis Distance Race launched in the early afternoon with a building WSW breeze. Forecasts were for the breeze to ease in the early evening into the low teens, but as we know, sometimes forecasts are wrong. SW 18-22 built into W and WNW 21-25 throughout the night and continued into the morning. No complaints for Denali as she is a great upwind machine and after roaring into the Newport Harbor finish line at 16 knots, we had won by over 45 minutes. Some good, challenging navigation (love it) and awesome performance by the Denali crew. Sweet way to wrap up the summer racing.

February deliveries, even south to the Caribbean, can be 'sporty' at times. However, having positioned sufficiently to the east, the squalls were abaft the beam, with the driving rain knocking down the seaway. Ripping along under reefs, with the boat nicely balanced and loving the conditions. Dufour 512, 'Avontuur', was super happy for 48 hours as we romped south to St Thomas. Smiling!

Double the size, double the fun, especially when you win the whole darn shooting match! Navigating for Nakupenda at the St Barths Bucket came down to the last race where we needed to break a three-way tie for first with a final race win. Pursuit style racing with mega yachts in 20+ knots of breeze is awesome. Hitting the laylines just right and working with a fabulous team got us the win as we passed the last boat in front of us on the last beat to the finish line.
From Barby MacGowan's (Media Pro International) blog of the event: Turning in a flawless performance today, the 34 metre sloop Nakupenda won the six-boat Mademoiselles to take overall victory in that class with a 4-1-1 score line. It also won the coveted overall prize represented by the Hermès Perpetual Trophy.
Nakupenda’s time-gaining and perhaps ultimately winning move, according to Nakupenda’s tactician Stu Ballantyne, was passing inside of the 50 metre Almyra II (in L’Esprit 2) at the Petite Groupers. “Our navigator Jim Marshall said we had room, so we did it, passing very close to the rocks.”

Winning the first regatta of 2023 reminded me that I hadn't updated a late, great win at the Newport Safe Harbor regatta last August on the J/V 66 Denali. Going into the last (6th) race of the series, we were tied with Irie for second, one point ahead of Stark Raving Mad. So, the pressure was on: we had to win. Mike D'amelio and the Denali crew pulled off an outstanding win in the last race, leaving us tied with Stark Raving Mad on points but winning in the tie-breaker having won the last race. As navigator, accurate layline calls and times to the mark helped the team stretch the lead to capture the win. Sweet victory with a great team.
