WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY: Inspired by Stormy Cochran of GSO Fishing, who saw Mountain Goats while hiking to Willow Lake above Crestone, CO in JULY! Oh, and did I mention the snow up to his waist in July? Stormy, if you see this we want photos!!

If you are hoping to see Mountain Goats this winter, I know for a fact that Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park should be your vacation destination. This photo was taken by Steve at the Blackhawk Cabins.

Most Folks don’t think of vacationing in South Central, Colorado in Winter, however that makes it the perfect retreat away from the crowds along the I-70 Ski Resort Corridor!

Winter adventures await in Conejos County, Colorado from snowmobiling and cross-country skiing Cumbres Pass to fishing the Conejos River, or hiking and wildlife watching. If your like me, you’d enjoy the scenic beauty of the San Juan Mountains while driving the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic & Historic Byway a 129-mile route connecting the towns of the San Luis Valley before dropping into New Mexico.

Activities and Attractions
• Three Forks Park features a fun cross-country ski and snowshoe trail, the North Fork Conejos River Trail #714, a moderate 3.5 mile trail with views of The Continental Divide.
• Fishing along the Conejos River in winter is best below the dam where anglers catch trout; it’s challenging due to cold weather, but it offers a unique experience in a beautiful setting.
• Conejos Canyon Bighorn Release Area Look for deer and bighorn sheep along the Conejos River west of Antonito and pronghorn antelope in the high-desert valley habitats.
• Sites stops include Colorado's first church built in 1863, Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Conejos.
• Manassa was the home of boxing great Jack Dempsey, The Manassa Mauler," and World's Greatest Heavyweight Boxer of the 20th Century! The museum is in the cabin where Dempsey was born.
• Sego Springs State Wildlife Area, part of Colorado Birding Trail, is an as oasis of riparian woodland and ponds, mixed with sage habitat and small cattail marshes.
• San Luis Hills Wildlife Area,12 miles east of Manassa, is part of the Grande National Forest and formed by ancient volcanic lava and ash-flow tuff.
• Turquoise is produced by the heating of copper minerals in basalt, is found in several areas throughout the region including the King Turquoise Mine. King’s Manassa Turquoise is green to blue-green veins that run through hard, golden brown rocks. The mine originally founded by IP King in 1894; originally named the Lick Skillet Mine.
• Pike’s Stockade, along the Conejos River northeast of Sanford, is a reconstruction of the small fortress built during the Zebulon Pike expedition by soldiers in 1806-7. It is one of the first documented structures built by Americans in what is now Colorado.
• McIntire Spring, northeast of Sanford, is near Pike’s Stockade and is fed by underground water flows naturally to the surface of the Earth. It was once the home of Colorado Gov. Albert Washington McIntire and is now the jewel in the crown of Bureau of Land Management in the San Luis Valley

Are you dreaming of a Colorado White Christmas?
I am!
However, I live on the Front Range, and well, Steve Kelley, my favorite KIMN Denver radio DJ, used to tell us Top 40 addicts that Santa was adding roller-skates to his slay. and according to todays 5 day forecast that will be true again this year!
WHAT MAKES A WHITE CHRISTMAS . . .
• The "presence" of snow, either on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day.
• It snows sometime during the 48 hours on the 24th or 25th; it does not need to stick to the ground.
• Have at least 1 inch of snow on the ground.
• YOUR local meteorologist has that power.
• Hallmark movies create a "white Christmas" through the use of artificial snow with ice block shavings, snow machines, and fire-retardant foam. I NEED A SNOW MACHINE!
• WDW uses “snoap” to create the white stuff on Main Street.
GOOD NEWS: Colorado's mountains are expected to receive 1-3 inches of snow on Christmas.

To reach Cuchara Mountain Park: Starting from the intersection of US 160 and SH 12, head south on SH 12 through La Veta for 18 miles to Pandero Avenue (it's a west turn only). Drive a mile on Panadero Ave; the avenue will make a sharp left toward Cuchara Mountain Mercantile and Park. If you continued to curve right, the road becomes Panadero Loop. NEED COFFEE and TREATS: In La Veta, stop at Ryus Avenue Bakery or Serendipity. In Cuchara, head to Lokal Perks or Higher Ground Coffee Cuchara.

Monday Mood: The Beaver Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs in November, traditionally associated with the time when beavers prepare for winter by taking shelter in their lodges. It is also known as a supermoon when it appears larger and brighter due to its proximity to Earth.

WHY IS NOVEMBER'S FULL MOON NAMED BEAVER?
Some believe that THE MOON acquired its name because it's the best time for trappers to hunt beavers before there are thick blankets of snow in the mountains. Beaver pelts reach their thickest during the winter months, and trappers were paid based on the weight of the pelts. As a result, November became a crucial month for beaver harvesting, as trappers didn’t have to deal with heavy snowfall.

Like Walt Disney, Jim Bishop always was moving forward, growing his dream as each goal was completed, and like Walt, his family will carry the torch forward.

Jim Bishop passed away November 21, 2024. My dad, Hilton, first met Jim in the summer of 1984 while traveling Colorado to sell advertising in our "Colorado Vacation Directory." The rock sculpture along Highway 65 caught his attention. Jim had already been building his castle for 15 years with a wheelbarrow and shovel. Today, it's a family favorite roadside attraction along the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway in south central Colorado.

To Quote from their website, "Bishop castle is a monumental statue in stone and iron that cries loud testament to the beauty and glory of not only Having a Dream, but Sticking with your Dream no matter what, and most importantly, that if you do believe in yourself and strive to maintain that belief, anything can happen!
