Choosing who will attend your birth can make a big difference. Choose those who bring a calm presence, who will support your wishes, and who will remind you to advocate for yourself.

This baby girl arrived on Christmas night, in the quiet of her home, with just her mom and dad to catch her. Named for her grandma who shared the same birthday, she beat the midwives and the doula. All was fine and calm and peaceful. 🌸

Wrap your baby like a little burrito to re-create the snugness of the womb. Swing or jiggle your baby in fast, tiny movements while supporting his head and neck. Make a shush sound or play white noise to mimic the sounds in the womb. Hold your baby positioned on the side or stomach, or even over your shoulder. Sucking on a pacifier, thumb, or breast can help soothe your baby.

Mothering the mother

My name is Sheila Toal, and I’m really excited about this new adventure in my life! I have been homeschooling my children for 19 years, a season that is quickly coming to an end. Two years ago, I dreamed of becoming a doula. I attended a birth, and that started the passion for all things birth related! Now I am a trained birth and postpartum doula. I love the birth process, I love supporting and educating women, and I love babies! I would love to be your doula!
