I am often asked, “how did (a girl like) you get into the well business”? Well, if you told me a decade ago that I would be starting a well inspection company, I would have thought you had a couple tools missing from your tool bag. But life is weird…
My husband and I met in college in the Fall of 1999. I was studying to be a Dietitian and he was going for Hydrogeology. I went on to grad school,

then practiced Dietetics for 8 years at a few different places. As it turns out, I enjoyed Nutrition, I just didn’t enjoy trying to get other people to like it. 😉
Around the time I was considering a career change, my husband’s parents (the owners of his company) were discussing retirement. My husband needed help and we knew that I was the right person for the job. I already had a little experience in the drilling field because he and I would often talk about his work and I would visit him on job sites, but we used to joke that our ideas of septic were very different; I certainly had a mountain of information to learn. So, I studied like crazy to sit for the 4 exams to become certified as a Well Driller and Pump Installer and was certified for both within 2 years of starting at the company. This was no easy feat for me as I was coming from a completely different field and the passing rate is

I am excited (and maybe a little sad) that I have accepted the position of Business Manager at Hawk Drilling Company. My amazing husband, Jeremy, is now the 5th generation owner and I have signed on to help him make the company even better!
Jeremy has 20 years of drilling experience, is a hydrogeologist and a Master Groundwater Contractor (the highest level of certification in the drilling industry) and I am so proud of him!
Hawk is available to help with inspections, disinfections, and water sampling, so please give us a call to help you (518-885-7952). I am keeping my cell number to help with your questions (518-396-9499).
It has been wonderful and I can't thank everyone enough for their support of me during the last 3 years. I have felt appreciated and valued by you guys, at that has meant a lot to me.

I shared this from another site. A fun example of what the inside of a well can look like. Note the geology changes (and the fact that they didn't have water until 300'). I always enjoy doing video inspections. :)

This was a nice surprise from NBT today. Had golf tees too...I live on a golf course and we keep saying that we should give it a try. We have clubs (from a yard sale), golf balls that are always in our yard, but never have tees. I guess I have no more excuses. :)

Just throwing out a thank you to the SBA...

Not a major complaint, stuff breaks and it seems to par that things would break now, but my level indicator needed major repairs and I wound up purchasing a new one instead - a huge bill right now. BUT, when I checked my account, I had an extra $1000 thanks to the SBA. Such a huge help. So grateful. Thank you so much.

I have had some very interesting jobs recently, but this one will stick with me. My comment from this day, "Wait, what?" There were 2 dug wells that tie together in the house, a septic tank upgradient of one of them, and wait for it....a hidden well in the basement. The plumbing was all interconnected, but the basement well lines were closed shut. Unsurprisingly, the coliform sample off the dug wells was too numerous to count and positive for E.coli. Take a good look at the dug well picture - the top ring had broken and slid off - I watched bugs move in and out of the cracks. The owner said that the water smelled like sulfur, I said no, it smells like septic.

Hi friends! I have another gross one...complete with a spider web full of bug p**p.

So, my PSA for you and your friends:
If you have one of these well caps, it is recommended that you contact a local certified drilling contractor to replace it with a Department of Health approved sanitary cap.

Did the walking tour at Saratoga Springs park this morning. Really enjoyed it. :) Tour guide said that holistic medicine suggests that a person will enjoy the flavor of the waters if they are deficient in the minerals. Decided I am not deficient. ;)

Friendly reminder that you should occasionally inspect your well for issues. The NYS Department of Health recommends that the well head be 12" or greater above grade level. This one was at grade and was apparently hit by a lawn mower. If you look closely, you will see my new friend. My son says he should be named "Mr. Wells", because he is living in the well.

Beautiful day for a flow test! Doing a test for a commercial site. Check out the methane. :)

Found this handout on the well care hotline website. It is a resource for Home Inspectors when doing a well test. Highlighted under the flow test portion:

"The flow test does not represent actual recovery in the well and may only reflect adequate STORAGE in the well AT THE TIME OF TESTING."

Pumping off storage does not ensure an adequate water supply. 300+' wells can hold as much as 450+ gallons in storage, but could recharge at

MacGyver, aka, Joe Cardinale. Howard Hanna Realtor/Mechanical Engineer (no kidding). I met with him on a job site in Catskill this morning, only to find that the previous tenants had "accidentally" removed the pressure tank, wiring to the panel box, and the 20 amp breaker. He didn't even break a sweat. He went and purchased everything we needed to get the pump hooked up to the panel box. Sadly, turns out the pump was either dead or also "accidentally" removed, but I am no less impressed. Joe is a ROCK STAR/Realtor extraordinaire!

BYE BYE STORAGE!

Had a great inspection last week! Lovely gentleman owned a house that he was told needed in house storage (600 gallons worth). We tested the well and aside from having >600 gallons of storage in the well, it recharges at more than 5 gallons per minute. I ran it for an hour and was only able to drop the level 30'! Conclusion: get rid of the storage and put in a stronger pump so he can enjoy the full benefits of this great well. Thanks, Gerry Magoolaghan (Select Sotheby's) for the referral. This was awesome news for the buyer.

I recently wrote an article for the NYS Drillers' Association and have been thinking about it a lot. The premise being that well inspections are not mandatory and often drilling companies don't have time to do them. It was like an introduction for me to other companies in NY that perhaps I have not yet had much experience with, and maybe "rally the troops" about the importance of inspections. It has gotten good feedback, but it has really gotten me thinking about well inspections not being mandatory.

I find myself always saying, "if a pool gets inspected by a pool company, and the septic gets inspected by a septic company, why are wells not being inspected by well companies"?

I have had so many interesting/frustrating experiences since opening. Deep wells that passed the home inspection on storage, but have no recharge to refill themselves, crazy non-coliform contamination making the people sick (coliform is the only bacteria tested for, high levels of non-coliform, but 0 coliform will still have a negative bacteria sample), no knowledge of where the well is, inability to install a sprinkler system because the pump is undersized or the well doesn't make enough...if they had just had a real well inspection.

Yes, inspections cost money, and there are many inspections to pay for when purchasing a home, but a well inspection offers peace of mind regarding your most important resource. Please encourage your friends and family to get a real well inspection if they are purchasing a home with a well. Wells are amazing sources of safe and free water, but they need maintenance and to not be ignored. Please let It is Well Inspection Services, or another certified drilling company help.

Interesting story from this past week of how a well inspection could have saved this customer a lot of headaches/money.

The client moved into the home 10 years ago and had a spigot test done by the home inspector. The information the client was given by the seller/realtor at the time, was that the well was next to the home, up on top of the hill. For the last 10 years, the client believed the functioning well was the well just next to the house. Last summer, a friend offered to mow the lawn and accidentally hit the well that was in the field, down the hill from the house. The client told them not to worry, that is not the well that feeds the house anyway. Fast forward to this month, they are trying to sell the house and the water sample came back positive for coliform and E.coli. I was hired to chlorinate the well and upon inspection of the well next to the house, determined that that was not his well. Turns out, the well that was hit by the friend was the well that feeds the house. The casing was split open and the cap had been knocked askew. For the last year, the client had been drinking contaminated water from a well that they didn't know was feeding their home. This is an issue that would have been figured out immediately during a well inspection and the owner would have known to get the well fixed as soon as it was damaged, thereby protecting themselves from contaminated water and avoiding the headache of a positive bacteria sample while trying to sell their home.

Interesting job the other day. The well was in a "shack" off the road in the woods. We had to drag the generator up the hill to hook the pump up. The well had not been used in years, and unfortunately, rodents found the well to be a great place to store acorns - check out the color of the water. I had a great time with the owner's Dad though. He gave me a tour of the area, including the Stone Church. The Church was beautiful (like nothing I have seen in the U.S.), and the views were amazing - pics never do it justice. Thank you, Dick, for the time you spent with me.
