While so far we seem OK in Topeka, I expect that by summer's end, we'll be experiencing it. Chlorine is going to be the new toilet paper.

The worst chlorine shortage the country has ever seen is set to rock this summer's pool season.

My comments on that blog;
It probably goes without saying that 2020 has been a crazy year and caused a lot of changes across the world. A lot of those changes have had monetary consequences. The recreational water industry is no exception. This year has been one of the busiest years I've ever had. But demand for work isn't the only issue. There have been supply issues for manufacturers as well. There was also a major chlorine manufacturing facility that was damaged in Hurricane Laura and caught fire and burned down. It's estimated that it was responsible for 1/3 of the total volume of trichlor production in the US. Trichlor is what chlorine pucks/tablets are made of. We've already seen the cost increase by 30% this year and it's fully expected to rise even more. If you have been sanitizing your pool with chlorine tablets, PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR THE COST OF YOUR TABLETS TO INCREASE DRAMATICALLY NEXT YEAR!!! And don't think this is a temporary increase. It will be years before the US's production capacity recovers.

As some of you may know, I've been advocating AGAINST stabilized chlorine for years now. As a professional who PERSONALLY takes care of over a dozen pools, I've seen first hand the effects that high stabilizer (cyanuric acid) has on the water chemistry. The primary source of cyanuric acid in pools is from chlorine tablets (trichlor) or quick dissolving shock (dichlor). But their comparatively low price points has made the argument for moving away from them difficult. 2021 and beyond is going to create an environment where the financial incentive to move away from stabilized forms of chlorine make sense. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this, but I personally think that liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is the best solution. I've recently found a manufacturer that makes a liquid chlorine feeder that looks like it will work very much like the tablet feeder that most people are used to using. There are also secondary sanitation/disinfection systems available that can reduce the volume of chlorine consumption, with UV and Ozone being the most prevalent.

This conversation always seems to end up with salt/chlorine generator systems, so I'll address that now. I'm not against those systems, but I don't think they're always the best fit either. Salt water is corrosive. There's no way around that. If you have an automatic cover system or a metal walled above ground pool, I would NOT recommend a salt/chlorine generator system. I've seen far too much damage to those systems from salt. The use of a zinc anode can slow the damage, but it still happens. I WOULD suggest a salt system on vinyl lined pools with with no automatic cover. If a zinc anode is installed at the equipment pad, before the heater, and it is replaced regularly like it should be, I've not seen any considerable increase in corrosion to the heater and pool lights in those systems.

In closing, be prepared for the maintenance on your pool to change going forward, but there are alternatives and if you're an existing customer of mine, rest assured I'm preparing for the upcoming year as best as possible an I'll do everything in my power to make sure next year goes as smoothly for you as I can make it.

2020 COVID-19 lockdowns have raised prices throughout the supply chain in almost all industries, including the pool business. 2021 will be more expensive.

I think that tonight is a night to worry about hot tubs freezing. If you, your friends, or neighbors have a tub that is drained, but not winterized or not heating for some reason, get a source of heat inside the cabinet of the tub ASAP! My preferred method is to use a very small space heater with a fan, set it on the lowest heat output setting, and turn the thermostat all the way up. A drop light does NOT produce enough heat to prevent freeze damage!!! If needed, I offer emergency evening and weekend calls, but I do charge time and a half. Using a small space heater under the spa as I just described will always prevent freeze damage until I can make it out during my normal hours.

Just a few reasons why I support small businesses. So what if you have to pay a little bit more? My friend Amy D reminds me to be a generous tipper. Many people work hard in the service industry and they rely on our generosity to support their family. Let's spend our money wisely - to help and support one another.

Please share this with your friends and family with hot tubs. Starting tonight until New Years day, the risk of your hot tub freezing and breaking pipes if it's not running/heating is very high. Please check your tubs! If doesn't seem to be working properly, call ASAP! An hour can mean the difference between a simple repair, and thousands of dollars worth of freeze damage. If needed, I offer emergency call hours on nights and weekends, but often a small space heater inside the cabinet of the tub is enough to prevent freeze damage until I can get there during normal working hours.

As the end of the year comes closer, I'm thoughtful of what to be thankful for. I want to thank all of my customers for allowing me to service their pools and spas this year. As I head into the winter and work slows down, I'm thankful for the work I've had in the past year and look forward to what the future holds. But mostly, I'm thankful for my friend and family who have helped me to get to where I am. Without their support, I couldn't do this. So to them, I give the greatest thanks.

Want to make some money? I need spa customers! I'm going to start a referral program for new spa customers. Tell all of your friends and family about Crystal Clear Waters, LLC, and if they use me for a service on their spa (I have a 1 hr minimum service call), they will receive $20 discount and I'll send you $20! To participate, I simply need a message or email from you saying who you've referred and the referral needs to tell me that they were referred by you.

I'm able to repair or replace just about anything spa related. Have an old spa that you're thinking about throwing away? Don't! Give me a call and I can give you a quote for making it like new, and for less than what a new spa will cost you!
