I have a deadline of June one to be out of my shop. It’s daunting since I have not yet found a space. And I have four buildings to move or dismantle. And I will be gone for 11 days this month in the Galapagos.

It’s also a busy month with clients as we complete all the spring cleans and get them ready for summer.

But we’re accomplishing a bit, a bit at a time. This is my new garden space, I’m sharing it with a new gardening friend, Ginny. Before during and after.

Will I miss my old Garden? Not really. I love creating new spaces.

The USDA has just released a new Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the first new version since 2012. The map is based on 30-year averages (1991 to 2020) for the lowest annual winter temperatures. The new data, along with the addition of more temperature stations and better mapping techniques, shifted about half the country into a warmer half-zone (such as Zone 6a to 6b). Find your current zone by entering your ZIP code on the map at this link: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/

So much fun, helping a new client in old Snowmass, open up their property to beautiful creek views that were there all along, just hidden behind, massive willows and deadwood. I’ve been doing the pruning myself, which is not easy, and I’m covered with scratches and filthy, but it’s so worth it. Yeah, I forgot to take a picture of the new view. Will post later.

Well, it’s not the type of detailed pruning we do, but it looks like it was effective.

We’ve added this to our staff for fall leaf removal this year. It will make things go so much faster and easier.

Doesn’t this make you want to seed pansies in all of your difficult areas?

Pet-friendly landscapes

It was just National Dog Day--a good time to think about how to keep our four-legged friends safe while maintaining our landscapes.

Avoid potentially dangerous plants:
Many dogs dig up or chew bulbs and plants. If your dog is a curious type who likes to dig or taste what’s growing, keep dangerous plants in an area that pups can’t access or avoid them altogether. Some plants that could make your dog sick:

• Spring flowering bulbs like daffodils or tubers like dahlias and irises
• Grapes, peach stones, and apple seeds
• Chrysanthemums, clematis, and horse chestnut tree

ASPCA offers a list on their website of plants that are potentially toxic to dogs. A landscape professional can also help you choose the right plants to keep your yard beautiful and your dog safe.

Provide shade:
When the sun is shining, dogs need a place to escape the heat. If you don’t have mature trees to offer shade, be sure your pet has access to a covered porch, patio, or other shade structure so they can cool off when they aren’t sunning themselves.

Make water available:
Make sure that your dog has access to fresh, clean water when they are outside playing or even just lying in the sun. If you have a water feature, make sure the products used to keep it clean are safe for pets.

And have fun with your pets!
