Peterson Predictive Maintenance was forged in 2001 out of a combination of troubleshooting skill, analytical experience, and a desire to provide a service that is sorely needed in a wide range of industries. My first career was as an arson investigator for the fire department. That experience gives PPM an edge when it comes to the logical analysis of a system or situation (i.e. why did this machin

e fail?). I then went to work in the maintenance field with a major company specializing in hydrocarbon fractionation (natural gas refinement). I was in charge of the reliability of all rotating equipment - consisting of 93 pumps and motors. While there, I initiated the first true predictive maintenance program at that facility. Through that effort, the company was able to extend their Mean Time Between Failure rate (MTBF rate) from once every two weeks to approximately twice a year. This was the proof of the value of predictive maintenance. As part of my training, I was schooled in the maintenance of centrifugal pumps in Nashville, TN. It was at that school that I was introduced to Infrared Thermal Imaging. I quickly recognized this as the leading edge of predictive maintenance. On returning from that school, I attempted to convince the company of the benefits of this new technology. I persisted in this attempt for almost two years, but the company would not meet the expense involved. Convinced of the value this new technology could provide, I resigned, refinanced my home, and went into business for myself. Since that time, PPM has built a customer base of around 300 businesses (and growing). Staying at the leading edge of technology for predictive maintenance, we have incorporated Ultrasound Detection into our services. Coupled with Infrared Thermal Imaging, these two technologies put us at the forefront of predictive maintenance services. Peterson Predictive Maintenance has more than doubled in the last year alone. And with our experience, technological advantage, and commitment to service - we expect that trend to continue far into the future. Chuck Peterson

It's been a very busy day of checking transformers all over Oklahoma. It's so amazing as to what you can find using infrared thermal imaging.

Today we discussed the difference between what we see with our eyes versus what we can see using infrared thermal imaging.

When we open the panels the first thing we see with our eyes is pretty simple, in some fuses boxes three fues match and in others they don't. If you look with infrared thermal imagining you see all the different temperature.

As you can see from the infrared thermal imagining photos you can detect if and where the temperatures are too hot and action needs to be taken.

If you have any question please feel free to give us a call at Peterson Predictive Maintenance.

Another busy week teaching infrared thermal imagining and ultra sound detection to an eager group.

Below is an Infrared Thermal Imaging picture and a Digital Picture.

This was found during a routine Infrared inspection of the electrical switch gear in a large manufacturing plant September 28th.

The image on the bottom is what the camera sees. It is showing 288° the image on the top is what our eyes see. There does not appear to be a problem. This powers a $250,000 twin screw air compressor. If this is allowed to run it will melt down and most likely destroy that compressor.
Peterson Predictive Maintenance recommended that this unit be shut down immediately and this problem corrected.

A20 minute shut down to correct this problem, saved a quarter of a million dollar compressor and that does not count losses due to unplanned shut down after melt down.

This imagine was taken to show there are belts missing. This is usually a belt misalignment problem. The belts are not pulling straight and one side is loose and the other is tight. That puts undo stress on the bearing forcing them to run crooked in the bearing race.

Proper and complete installation is of prime importance for proper maintenance.

When a machine is not properly installed and short cuts are taken the life of the machine is drastically reduced.

Notice in this photo the belts are not properly aligned and a tie down bolt is missing on the motor foot. This puts a twist In the motor case and shortens the life of the motor as much as half. Also noticed a junction box is left uncovered. These things are not acceptable in the predictive maintenance world.

It is that time of year again already.

Time to check the electrical boxes and wire connections in the MCC locations in your grain elevators.

We specialize in electrical inspections, using Infrared Thermal Imaging in grain elevators. We do inspections in approximately 100 facilities per year.

We must remember that grain dust is 6 times more powerful that dynamite. An electrical short or a melt down in a dust charged atmosphere could be really deadly.

We like to check all the connections prior to harvest so if there is a potential problem it can be fixed before harvest, so we don’t take a chance of this problem shutting down operations in the middle of the busiest time of year. We check from the transformer all the way through the system looking for loose connections or potential problems so they can be fixed before they become a real problem.

Please call Chuck Peterson with any questions that you might have. He has been doing this for 20 years and is very knowledgeable about Infrared.
