If you work in the sustainable travel space, you’ve likely noticed a few new reports that just hit the streets.
> Kind Traveler’s () 2022 Global Impact Tourism Report: Hotels, Charities, and Destinations
> Booking.com’s () Sustainable Travel Report 2022
I’m always a bit leery of reports like these because people who respond to them are likely to be travelers, and they’re likely to be familiar with the concept of sustainable travel. That is to say, a *huge* number of people who aren’t particularly engaged in the travel experience are not considered in these reports.
However, even if the results are a bit skewed, these two particular reports offer important insight into what is on travelers’ minds (especially in regard to sustainability and accommodations).
Even more important: This information highlights specific actions those in the tourism industry should take to make the leap to sustainable travel even easier for those who are primed to make the leap.
A few of the key findings this year include:
🌳78% of global travelers intend to stay in a sustainable property at least one in the coming year. (Booking.com) Yet, 48% say their greatest challenge in traveling sustainability is choosing accommodations that are sustainable and social conscious. (Kind Traveler)
🌳32% of respondents say they see more sustainable travel options, yet other options tend to appeal more to them. However, 28% say that travel companies proposing alternative destinations to prevent overcrowding would nudge them toward more sustainable travel choices. (Booking.com)
🌳25% of respondents would be willing to pay more for travel activities to ensure they are giving back to local communities. Attention, travel companies: 32% want you to suggest things to do and places to visit so they are! (Booking.com)
The full reports can be found on the websites of Kind Traveler and Booking.com. Take the time to browse though – you might find something that provides fodder for creative sustainability strategy!
