Bold Coast Maine Discover the unique beauty, culture, history, and recreational opportunities of unspoiled Bold Coast
(1)

The Bold Coast National Scenic Byway is a 125-mile driving route through coastal Washington County, Maine, that offers an opportunity to experience the unique beauty, culture, history, and recreational opportunities of an unspoiled DownEast Maine, where the water sparkles, the salt air rejuvenates, and the people still work and play in rhythm with the shifting of the tides, the migration of the fi

sh, the turning of the leaf, the falling of the snow, the warming of the soil. The Byway route extends from the coastal fishing community of Milbridge northeasterly along the coast to Lubec, the easternmost town in the United States, and then scoops back and around Cobscook Bay to its terminus in Eastport, overlooking international waters and the islands of New Brunswick, Canada. Along the way, visitors experience the rugged, unspoiled beauty of coastal Down East Maine, passing through iconic wild blueberry barrens; abundant farmland; coastal forests yielding to tidal marshes, and bays; clear-flowing rivers, streams, and lakes; active commercial fishing harbors; and historic villages lined with structures that exemplify the 19th Century shipbuilding, lumber processing, and sardine canning industries.

Our Story

The Bold Coast region offers an experience unlike any other in the northeastern United States: a way of life intimately connected across millennia with a wild and scenic coastal environment.

Active fishing villages and prolific blueberry barrens reflect this historic relationship as people continue to harvest the natural bounty of land and sea, as their ancestors have done for hundreds, even thousands, of years.

Immerse yourself in the gentle pull of this magical landscape, where salt air rejuvenates the soul and people still work and play within nature’s rhythm – from the dailines of shifting tides and rising sun to a seasonal migration of fish, turning of leaf, and warming of soil.

From the Schoodic Peninsula and Acadia National Park to the international border community of Calais, the Bold Coast is rich in unspoiled vistas and strong cultural traditions.
