The one and only: Beechey Island!

The journey through the Northwest Passage with Quark Expeditions culminates at the remarkable Beechey Island, a small, uninhabited island in the Canadian Arctic.

This site holds profound historical significance as a pivotal location in the ill-fated Franklin Expedition of 1845.

🚢 Led by Sir John Franklin, the expedition aimed to navigate the Northwest Passage but became trapped in pack ice, leading to the crew's abandonment of their ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.

🙏🏽 In the late 1980s, archaeologists discovered the graves of three crew members on Beechey Island, revealing harrowing evidence of the expedition's tragic fate.

The island serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by Arctic explorers and has since become an important site for research into the effects of Arctic exploration, survival, and the environmental conditions of that era.

If you share our passion for history, cultural exploration, wildlife encounters, and breathtaking iceberg sightings, then the Northwest Passage is calling your name!

WHAT AN ENCOUNTER!

On this NWP with Quark Expeditions guests had the privilege to encounter with this magnificent animal eating and resting on an iceberg at Croker Bay.

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) have evolved a range of adaptations that enable them to survive and thrive in the harsh, cold environments of the Arctic!

We listed a few for you if you wonder how they manage to survive here:

1. Double layer of thick fur,
2. Thick blubber fat that can be up to 4.5 inches (11.5 cm), that provides insulation against the cold and serves as an energy reserve during times when food is scarce,
3. Large body mass that helps to conserve heat, as well as the rounded body shape that minimizes the surface area exposed to cold temperatures, reducing heat loss,
4. Smaller ears and tail compared to other bear species, reducing the amount of body heat lost through these extremities,
5. Paws large and furry,
6. Metabolic rate that can lower during periods of fasting, allowing them to survive without food for extended periods.

Not to mention their food preferences (other animals blubber) and the snow dens they dig to rest and keep warm.

Fascinating isn't?? 🐻‍❄️

Dive into the fascinating world of whale identification! 🐋

Did you know that each whale has unique fin patterns, much like our fingerprints? Each one tells a different story and serves as a signature mark for each individual.

By taken pictures of it, researchers can track their movements and monitor populations. Through study of multiple sightings of individuals over time and space, scientists can learn about migratory patterns and home ranges, model population growth or decline, and even estimate the survival rate of individuals in a population.

You can also help by submitting the pictures you take in your voyage to happywhale.com, that identify individual humpback whales through automated image recognition. It's a platform that engages citizen scientists to identify individual marine mammals... for fun and for science!

Next time you spot a whale, take a moment to appreciate those beautiful animais and contribute with data 🌐

Ps: not only humpback whales but many other marine mammal species

MIDNIGHT SUN

✨ Is a natural phenomenon occurring in regions near the Earth's poles, including Antarctica, during their respective summer seasons. It occurs because of the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to its orbit around the sun.

In places like Antarctica, during the summer months, the sun remains visible at local midnight, creating a prolonged twilight period where the sky remains illuminated. This phenomenon is a stark contrast to the winter months when the sun does not rise above the horizon for an extended period, leading to continuous darkness.

Third picture was taken by our guest at 2am!

Experiencing the Midnight Sun is a breathtaking display of nature's wonders, offering unique opportunities for photography and appreciation of natural cycles.

Landing in Greenland is a great opportunity for us to learn more about the indigenous people who primarily inhabit the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, Alaska (USA), and Chukotka (Russia), called Inuits.

They have a distinct cultural and linguistic heritage, traditionally living as hunters and gatherers in harsh Arctic environments.

On some of our expeditions to the Arctic you will have the chance to land at Ittoqqortoormiit, the most isolated town in East Greenland, with only 350 inhabitants.

Did you know?
The colors of buildings often carry specific meanings:

Red for churches and shops
Green for radio communications
Blue for factories and fish plants
Yellow for hospitals
Black for police

The community's resilience and deep connection to their environment make it a fascinating destination for travelers seeking adventure and cultural immersion in the Polar regions!
