Those of you who've been on our Night at Green Lawn Tour are well acquainted with the story of Emil Ambos. During the last years of his life, he was known to capture leutistic squirrels at his pleasure farm and release them onto Capitol Square in downtown Columbus. It's interesting that over the last several years, these white squirrels hang out not too far away from his grave in the cemetery - and that they've been nicknamed the "ghosts of Green Lawn". For the first time ever, I spotted one of these "ghosts" as I was getting ready to start a Creepy Columbus Tour on Capitol Square. Your legacy lives on, Emil. ๐๐ป๐ฟ

In 2017, we traveled to Kelly, KY to attend the Little Green Men Festival - commemorating a 1955 incident where two families in rural Kentucky found themselves terrorized by a bunch of little green men. Despite how silly that sounds, it is considered one of the best documented cases of a close encounter of the third kind.
For marketing purposes, the event's organizers depicted these terrifying creatures as friendly little aliens that look like they'd happily drop their a**l probes to help an old lady cross the street.
The festival also happened to be in the path of totality during a solar eclipse. Having only ever witnessed partial eclipses, I had no idea what I was in for. The experience was all at once beautiful, eerie and conscious-altering.
In her book, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ค๐ฃ๐ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐๐ก๐ , Annie Dillard likens it to becoming one of the dead. The world takes on the appearance of an old tin print photograph as a lid shuts over the sun. Then light, color and nature go all wrong and, if you are near other humans you'll hear their screams as you are enveloped in darkness. Twilight surrounds you on the horizon and then a brilliant diamond ring appears in the sky and you're left stunned as you slowly pass back into light.
If you get a chance to witness tomorrow's eclipse, I highly suggest you be sure to do so in the path of totality. You will never forget it.
We wish you all a safe and happy time in the shadow!
Most of the time, these ghost gags end poorly for those pulling the prank.
They've risen! Our new Spooky Scents candles have arrived. Enjoy the pleasant aroma of a summery day that turns to the earthy dampness of the grave, the rich warmth of flowers and spices used in the Egyptian mummification process, or a haunting hint of perfume and to***co mixed with the deep fragrance of a mouldering old house. Our most popular candle, Eau de Frogman, sold out within hours of its introduction, but we will have more available soon! This small run of 10oz scented candles are available for home delivery within the Columbus area at the link below. ๐

Our most popular post of all time, retelling the eerie tales of Ballyboley Forest in Northern Ireland. Happy St Patrick's Day!
Historically speaking, March and April aren't the safest times to be out and about in Columbus, Ohio. Many of our most tragic and perplexing crimes seem to have taken place during these two months. Whether it be the flood of 1913, the prison fire of 1930, the disappearance of Brian Shaffer or unsolved murder of Joey LaBute, bad things tend to happen around this time of year. Don't even get me started on the pair of human legs found in a Rumpke Dumpster back in 2017!
Anyhoo, drawing on a much forgotten spring-time tragedy, it was on this date, sixty-five years ago, that an unknown assassin destroyed the dreams of a kindly Italian immigrant couple at their tiny home and confectionery/carryout business in Columbus' Victorian Village.neighborhood. Here is their story:
Sam Debellis came to Columbus in 1927, seeking to make a better life for he, his wife and their two children (one of which was not yet born). His son joined him in 1936 and attended OSU, but his wife, Josephine, remained in Italy with their daughter until 1947, when she finally came to America to help her husband in running their small business at 453 W Poplar St. The daughter, which Sam had never met, chose to remain in her home country of Italy.
The carryout didn't earn Sam and Josephine much money, but they were known to give away milk, bread and lunch meat to those who couldn't afford to pay. They were, consequently, well-liked in the neighborhood - which was much less affluent than it is today. In fact, in 1959 the Debellis' building was in the path of the "Goodale Slum Clearance" project that was preparing to get underway.. That year, the couple planned to use their settlement money from the project to return to Italy and visit their daughter.
The dream of returning to their homeland was shattered at 1:40am on the morning of March 14th, 1959. It was then that Sam awoke to the sound of banging metal accompanied by the smell of smoke. Thinking the furnace was broken, he went into the basement to tinker with the heater. Finding everything in order, he went back upstairs, at which point his wife arose and traced the sound and smell to the backdoor. Suddenly, a shot rang out, sending gun pellets through the door; piercing the frosted glass and grazing Josephine. Frightened, she retreated back to the bed in their small abode on the west side of the room. Sam fired a..38 pistol and then a shotgun into the backyard without effect. After doing so, he tried to call the police, but in the moment was too excited to dial the number.
Then, for some odd reason, Josephine returned to the backdoor a few minutes later. Only seconds after she did so, a shotgun blast tore through the backdoor, this time hitting her in the chest, stomach, face and arms - throwing her body backwards and killing the gentle, pleasant, 63 year-old-woman instantly.
Sam ran into the street, screaming for help, which drew the attention of a passing police officer. Despite an immediate search, however, no culprit was found.
It was theorized that whomever the murderer was, they knew the couple well. Their backyard was a maze of fences, which the killer's footprints revealed were deftly avoided as they fled the scene. Also, the couple had a vicious German Shepard, which wouldn't allow even their closest of friends to venture into the yard unscathed. However, the dog had mysteriously vanished earlier that day and was never seen again.
Despite the swift response by police, a motive and suspect were never determined. Josephine not only lacked enemies, but was very well-liked. It was suggested that her husband was the intended target, but he, too, had no adversaries. The case remains unsolved to this day and the site where this mysterious murder happened is the northern parking lot of the BP gas station that currently stands at Neil Ave and Poplar St. in Victorian Village.
Josephine Debellis is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, in southern Franklin County.
Stay tuned to learn about more mysterious murders and malevolent misdoings on our upcoming true crime walking tours - coming soon!

On the outskirts of a tiny village in the mountains of West Virginia there is a lonely spot marked by a small fence: two tiny stones and a sign which designates the place as the "L***r's Grave". This is the burial place of George Rashid, a Syrian who immigrated with his wife to the US in 1902.
George worked for the railroad and was diagnosed with leprosy in Elkins, WV, in early 1906. According to legend, he tried to flee to his native country in hopes that he'd cure his affliction by swimming in the River Jordan. Instead, he was caught in Philadelphia, PA and, under the care of the B & O Railroad, taken to the end of their line in the remote village of Pickens, WV. He lived there in a box car for a period before being moved to a tent, then eventually a shanty.
Believing that he was bathing in the river that supplied the town's drinking water, a local mob tried to lynch the infirmed man (citing the Bible's mention of l***rs, but ignoring the parts where Christ bathed their feet and that murder is considered a mortal sin ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ). A local physician who looked after Rashid, Dr. James Cunningham, held the mob at bay with his pistol and cared for his patient until Rashid died in his sleep from heart failure just before Halloween, 1906.
Two small stones were placed to mark the l***r's grave and, in 1986, the Pickens Historical Society placed a proper marker at the lonely grave of the L***r of Pickens.

Edward Gorey would've turned 99 years old today. Here is a still from my first visit to his grave in Ironton, Ohio's Woodland Cemetery, where I unwittingly mimicked the cover of his 1963 classic, The Gashlycrumb Tinies.

I stopped by North Bank Park after tonight's Booze & Boos Tour to share a little *hiccup* gloomy history. Poor David Pickens is buried in an unmarked grave in Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Cooper Stadium. The coroner counted 92 shotgun blasts in David's chest between his waist and neck. THIS is why we have a pride festival. ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
This bizarre anomaly was caught on camera during an artist reception at Witchlab's event space (1187 W. Broad St) in January 2024. None of those present - which can be seen moving around at the bottom of the screen in real time - were aware of the "thing" that danced above their heads. This footage, along with other strange occurrences, have led the good folks at @witchlab to organize an overnight paranormal investigation of the space starting tomorrow, May 4th, at 8:30pm and ending Sunday, May 5th at 5am.
