𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗺𝗮!🐢
Three species of sea turtles nest on Alabama's Gulf Coast: Loggerhead, Kemp's Ridley, and Green sea turtles. Our most common nesting sea turtle here in Gulf Shores is the Loggerhead. At night, female Loggerheads will emerge from the Gulf to lay about 120 eggs in their nest and then return to the water. Baby sea turtles grow inside these eggs, and once they are all ready, they hatch and crawl out of their nest together. Just like their mama, Loggerhead turtles prefer nighttime, so they leave their nest, follow the light reflecting off the water from the moon, and crawl towards the Gulf in the dark.

It is important we help protect these sea turtles by doing the following:
🔦 Avoid using flashlights or flash photography on the beach at night. If you do use a light at night, please use red filter lights.
💡 Turn off outside patio lights and shield indoor lights from shining onto the beach at night.
🥚 Do not disturb sea turtle nests.
↔️ Keep your distance (at least 30 feet) from adult turtles that come onto the beach to nest.
🐢 Leave sea turtle tracks undisturbed.
👣 Leave Only Footprints! Do not leave beach gear, holes, or trash on the beach.

We’re kicking off our Christmas festivities with a celebration at Sims Park. Families can enjoy pictures with Santa, holiday treats, crafts, and the 8th Annual Snowball Drop. The Snowball Drop is a man-made blizzard featuring 8,000 ping pong balls dropped from above. Winning snowballs will have a number that correlates with a prize supplied by our generous sponsors.

On Tuesday, December 5, the City of Gulf Shores will open its doors to host the Baldwin Pops band for a Christmas Concert at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center. The Baldwin Pops is an organization of volunteer musicians whose mission is to share music in a concert band format free of charge to the citizens of Baldwin County.

This event will not require a ticket. Seats are first come, first serve. Baldwin Pops Concerts are a collection site for the US Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program. Patrons are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped gift.

Beginning at 8 a.m., families can dive into a wholesome breakfast complete with sausage, bacon, eggs, and pancakes. Admission for Breakfast with Santa is $5.00, while children 3 and under are free. Children will also receive a complimentary picture with Santa.

🐢Happy World Turtle Day!🐢 This annual observance began in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue. The day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats, as well as to encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.

Meet ”our” favorite yard visitor, a yellow-bellied slider. We call her “Kitty,” because more than twice her path across the yard tricked someone in the house that maybe a cat was in the tall grasses of the yard. Kitty makes a home of the wetlands behind our cottage and travels through the yard to other food sources occasionally. Kitty could live 30-40 years if she stays safe and healthy, and we hope she does!

There are many other turtles in the area, some common and some endangered. Please be respectful of all wildlife when visiting Fort Morgan, and always fill in the holes you dig on the beach to keep turtles safe. For more information, follow Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.
