We all know that Naval Live Oaks is a stunning expanse of seashore, trails, and of course, live oaks. But do you know its history? 🤔

Where the Naval Live Oaks Area lies today was originally purchased by the US Government from Spain in 1828. President John Q. Adams wanted to cultivate and harvest Live Oakwood for building US Navy ships. Eventually, the area became the first (and only) federal tree farm. 🌲

In October of 1886, the US Army turned Fort Pickens into a forced labor camp for 16 Chiricahua Apache prisoners of war.

“For nearly two years we were kept at hard labor in this place and we did not see our families until [April], 1887,” said Goyahkla, or Geronimo, a well-known Apache leader and medicine man.

The forced separation of Geronimo and Apache members from their families was a direct violation of a treaty made with the United States government.

Today, this story of continued resistance against tremendous odds, and the price of that resistance, inspires thousands of visitors to Gulf Islands National Seashore’s Fort Pickens.
